Castle Nijenrode is located on the banks of the river Vecht. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century and is now home to the Nyenrode Business University. In 1275 Gerard Splinter of Ruwiel Kasteel Nijenrode built on the banks of the Vecht. The castle was destroyed several times and later rebuilt in a Dutch Renaissance style. In the 17th century, the French used it as their headquarters during the occupation, and from the 18th to the 20th century it was owned by two prominent merchant families. This Business School is the only private university in the Netherlands and situated on the premises of a 13th century castle. The Castle is a national protected monument and cannot be accessed. It can be viewed from the road or from the river "De Vecht", like so many other beautiful old estates along this river. Take the boat for a day out on a sight seeing tour towards Nieuwersluis, Breukelen, Oud-Zuilen or the other way around to Loenen and Vreeland. Bring some nice nibbles and drinks on the boat or take a break in style at Restaurant "buitenplaats Slangevecht" in Breukelen or more casual at restaurant "Geesberge" in Maarssen.
