Beautiful alpine lake, moderate hike. Carry bear spray, water and snacks. 3-4 hours round trip. From trailhead parking, watch river rafting groups come in, or pause before the Mad Mile.

Intermediate. Located about half way to Big Sky from Bozeman, Lava Lake is an amazing mountain lake located only 3 miles up a not-so-strenuous trail! This lake stays chilly year round but is great for a dip in the mid to late summer! Bring your fishing pole if you like. Also don't forget bear spray on this one, there are grizzlies around these parts.
