It is located in the seaside village of Apollo and is an unfinished male statue, 10.45 meters high, which is on the ground, as it was never detached from it. Kouros dates back to the beginning of the 6th century BC. and represents the god Dionysus or the god Apollo and both were worshiped in Naxos and experts disagree about who he represents. A place full of energy! Opportunity to visit the picturesque village of Apollo with the small beach and the traditional fish taverns.

Near the coastal settlement of Apollonas on Naxos is one of the two ancient marble quarries of Naxos, where sculpture, the greatest art of antiquity started. Hundreds of half-finished statues and blocks of marble would be slided down on ramps from here to the pier of the ancient port of Apollonas for further transportation to the island of Delos and various other places. The colossal but unfinished 11-meter statue (Kouros) of Dionysus, as well as many remnants of other unfinished statues, parts of architectural structures, marks from chisels and carved surfaces can be seen today all over the hill and slopes of the ancient quarry.

Near the village of Apollonas lies an ancient marble quarry of many that exist in Naxos and the Cyclades. The quarry has been supplying raw materials and marble products to the Delos sanctuary and other areas of the Greek world for many centuries. The statue is more than 10 meters high and experts disagree over who represents it, others claiming to represent Apollo and others Dionysus, both worshiped in Naxos. The huge half-finished statue is certainly not Kouros as it has none of the characteristics of the Kouroi of ancient times as it does not depict a young man, has a beard and has one arm bent. But since it is established to refer to this as Kouros of Apollo (Apollo is the village just below the quarry and is probably the port from where statues and marbles were loaded in antiquity and transported to Delos and elsewhere. Where was the huge statue intended for? For a temple of course, but in Naxos or some other area? At the same time that the statue is dated, in the 6th century BC, the construction of a giant temple of Apollo had begun in the port of Naxos, which was never completed, and Portara is the indisputable witness of its great dimensions. Are the Apollo Kouros and the Temple of Apollo linked in any particular way except that they have been a Naxian land host for thousands of years?
