Relatively short hike, first mile is tough but the the end goal of Big Schloss makes it worth it. Big Schloss is a large rock formation with a 360 degree mountain and valley. It also boasts a man made bridge which takes you to the actual Schloss. I always wonder how they got the materials up there to build the bridge. Whew!!.

Big Schloss Trail is one of the prettiest and most interesting hikes near Northern Virginia. The hike feels more remote than hikes in nearby Shenandoah National Park. Aside from the 270 degree views at the summit, you get intermittent views along the way, and the trail itself is filled with lichen-covered boulders and has a wonderful enchanted forest feel.

Sister hikes Big Schloss and Tibbet Knob are both accessible from the Wolf Gap Recreation Area. Big Schloss is a bit longer and more popular, but the rock outcropping—named by German immigrants, it means castle—is a sight worth seeing. Tibbet Knob is shorter, but has two rock scrambles to make your hike to the vista an interesting one. Bring snacks. You’ll want to linger at the top for both.

This is our favorite hike in the area. 4.3 mile out and back trail along the West Virginia/Virginia state line. The ascent is somewhat difficult, but easy once you get to the ridge line. Pair this hike with Tibbet Knob (same trailhead) for an 8 mile hike.
