La primera construcción que se levantó en este lugar fue a principios del siglo XIX y fue en honor a San Pedro Apóstol. Construida con palmas y madera, los seguidos huracanes e incendios la derribaron en poco tiempo. En 1910, se comenzó la construcción que hoy en día se puede visitar en el mismo lugar, haciéndose con el primer cargamento de cemento llegado a la isla, convirtiéndose en el inicio de la modernización y pasando así a la historia del país. La entrada principal está coronada por una arquivolta con un rosetón sobre ella. El rosetón tiene el escudo franciscano, que fue la orden religiosa que hizo el templo. Los pináculos, contrafuertes y antepechos están decorados al estilo gótico, pero son de hormigón, no de piedra. De interior románico, la nave central está abovedada con lucernarios y arcos de medio punto hechos de vitrales, con lo que le da mucha iluminación a la iglesia. Destacan los vitrales en grisalla, que conforman la colección más importante y de mayor valor económico de la República Dominicana. The main entrance is crowned by an archivolt with a rose window above it. The rose window has the Franciscan coat of arms, which was the religious order that made the temple. The pinnacles, buttresses and parapets are decorated in the Gothic style, but they are made of concrete, not stone. With a Romanesque interior, the central nave is vaulted with skylights and semicircular arches made of stained glass, which gives the church a lot of lighting. The stained glass windows in grisaille stand out, making up the most important and most economically valuable collection in the Dominican Republic.
