A bird sanctuary in the greater False Bay Nature Reserve. Pathways through the reserve to hides overlooking the many waterways and vleis. Abundant birdlife, and you might even encounter the resident hippos

If you are a keen bird watcher, Rondevlei Nature Reserve may be just the place for you to visit. There are a few bird hides there, and perhaps you'll get to see the hippo that is said to live there.

Forming part of the greater False Bay Ecology Park, Rondevlei Nature Reserve is home to around 230 bird species, as well as a number of reptiles and mammals. For many, the star of Rondevlei is its small hippopotamus population, as it’s the only reserve in Cape Town that is home to these fascinating creatures.

The six uniquely built bird hides will enchant bird watchers and nature lovers alike. And it's the ONLY city-based nature reserve that has big herbivores including hippopotamii and eland. There's also a species of erica from the fynbos floral kingdom that was almost extinct in the wild until it was discovered growing in the garden of a man in Belgium. The seeds were brought back, and Rondevlei is now the only place where you can see this erica. This reserve is also fine for walkers and joggers. There are lovely picnic benches and tables and clean ablute facilities. Oh, and best of all: entrance is FREE!
