First of all, wear comfortable shoes for exploring Belgrade Fortress. I recommend it to visit because its located on the confluence Danube and Sava rivers, which is by it self breathtaking view. Belgrade Fortress used to contain the entire city and has lived through 2,000 years of conflict. The Fortress consists of the old citadel (Upper and Lower Town) and Kalemegdan Park (Large and Little Kalemegdan). There’s history at every turn in the fortress, from the Roman well to the medieval gate of Despot Stefan Lazarević. Pobednik (Victor) is the postcard monument, a statue wielding a sword and falcon atop a Doric column. This dates to 1928 and commemorates Serbia’s defeat of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire in WWI. Also, if you are intrested about Belgrade Military Museum, you can see it on Belgrade Fortress. In the galleries is a hoard of weapons going back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans all way to the modern times . Also, in a museum you can see more sensitive subject matter, displaying some NATO equipment from 1999. Against the northeast walls of the Belgrade Fortress sits the oldest church in the city -Ružica church (Little Rose Church) and it is a Serbian Orthodox church. The exact origins of the building are unknown, The earliest mention is from the 1400s. Nebojša Tower is the only surviving mediaeval tower of the Belgrade Fortress, built in the 15th century and it was the major defensive tower of the fortress for centuries, next to all mentioned there are many other towers and gate complexes such as Zindan Gate Complex, Leopold gate, Defterdar`s Gate and others. That walk can take around 2hours or more. On the fortress you can have as well nice drink in Boho bar which is modern place, with cool ambience for good pictures. They serve cocktails but for my taste, Belgrade has much more better cocktail bars but still I recommend to visit for a drink. or two.

This fortress, constructed all throughout the 1st to the 18th century, with the aim of being a strategic place for defence on the hill above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, today represents an outdoor museum. The Pobednik Monument (The Victor) which is the symbol of Belgrade, is the focal point of the entire area which is made up of the Belgrade fortress, divided into the Upper and Lower town, and Kalemegdan park. Don’t miss out on seeing the Roman Well, the Great Gunpowder Warehouse, the Military Bunker and the Clock Tower on your walk. Take a look at the numerous exhibitions in the Military Museum, the Nebojša Tower and the Museum of Natural History. The Great Kalemegdan Staircase will bring you to a place with a breath-taking view over the Sava and Danube confluence, of Novi Beograd and Zemun. Down the landscaped path you can see many sculptures from the turn of the 20th century, erected in honor of writers, composers, and other public figures.

Belgrade Fortress was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and is protected by the Republic of Serbia. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Belgrade, with Skadarlija being the second. The admission is free. The cliff-like ridge overlooks the Great War Island and the confluence of the Sava river into the Danube, and makes one of the most beautiful natural lookouts in Belgrade. The secret underworld of Kalemegdan reveals a spider’s web of tunnels and caves, some of which date back to the Neolithic period.
