This town is typical for its cave houses, which are carved into the mountain. Even the local chapel is completely carved out of mountain rock.

Artenara high in the mountains and with cave houses and beautiful nature around. there is a Cave restaurant at the entrance of Artenara where you see a big cross on top of the hill. You can visit the cave house museum before 4pm. I suggest you driving from Artenara to La Aldea de San Nicolas. A beautiful rough road like the Far west!! this is route GC210.

It is also an opportunity to visit our historical heritage of humanity, the site covers an area of almost 18,000 hectares, just over 11 percent of the entire surface of the island, and four municipalities (Artenara, Tejeda, Agaete and Gáldar). From east to west, the first enclave is the most representative: the Roque Nublo. Nearby is the Bentayga, whose Sierra has also contributed to the candidature Cuevas del Rey, another of the emblematic fortresses of the ancient Canaries, and Roque itself, epicenter of the Caldera de Tejeda with more than a hundred natural and artificial caves with multiple applications. To the northeast is Risco Chapín, where two other important archaeological sites are located in the sacred spaces: Cuevas de los Candiles and Cuevas del Caballero. In the Candiles is the largest set of engravings of known pubic triangles and an enormous profusion of bowls and bas-reliefs. Its name is due to the presence of luminaries or lamps in its interior, where it contains up to 345 engravings. In El Caballero there are a total of seven artificial caves excavated. Towards the east is one of the most impressive landscapes: Mesa de Acusa. It is a spectacular geological monument that hosts one of the largest troglodyte enclaves of the aborigines. Acusa Verde, Acusa Seca, Los Corrales, El Álamo, La Candelaria, El Hornillo, Fortamaga and El Vedado del Tablón are the current names of the different "troglodyte neighborhoods" that are recognized in Acusa. Many are already depopulated but until the eighteenth century Acusa had more inhabitants than the people of Artenara.
