This is one of my favorites! They are a French-style bakery with everything from almond croissants to gorgeous, tasty sugar cookies to delicious sandwiches with complimentary salad on the side. Wonderful ingredients and ambiance. Go early to avoid the family crowds. Not open on Mondays.

Cranky's Donut Shop is one of the local favorites, and it is one of our family's, too. It is well-priced, family-friendly, and has delicious donuts. They have traditional stuff as well as gummy bear-topped donuts, flavored coffees, etc. Go early; the locals crowd in starting around 9:00 a.m. Oh! And it turns into a pizza place in the evenings if you'd like to go for dinner--some say the pizza is even better than the donuts.

Juniper 61, named so because it's on the corner of North and 61st Street, has a wide range of very well-made food. It's mostly a mixture of American and Indian-inspired cuisine, with flatbreads and a specialty meat dish in rotation. The menu changes seasonally, and they have a nice mid-to-upper level drink selection. This is where we take the in-laws and/or out-of-towners we want to take out to a nice dinner.

Il Mito is the local upper-end Italian fare spot. We haven't been for a dinner yet, but their appetizers and drinks have made a nice date night for us once or twice.

Parks & Nature

The park has beautiful lakeside scenery, hiking trails, sand, shade from the trail, and lots of good people-watching. The trail is paved, or you can walk along the beach. There are also soccer fields and an outdoor exercise station.

This state trail is highly loved for its long, rolling bike and hiking trail that runs across the Southern part of the state.

Drinks & Nightlife

What could say, "Welcome to Wisconsin!" better than a northwoods-style bar? This is a fun spot--the ambiance has antler chandeliers and flannel booth-backs. It may sound a little kitschy, but they actually pull it off pretty well. There's also a fun outdoor patio area for warmer months.

Wauwatiki is a relatively new establishment, and the pun is a hit so far! As one could guess, it's a tiki-themed bar, but they serve a variety of drinks.

Arts & Culture

The Milwaukee Art Museum is right on the lake and boasts art in terms of nature, architecture, and of course the things that are inside, too. It's a great spot to go if you are even a little inclined toward these sorts of jaunts.

Another iconic Milwaukee staple, the Harley-Davidson Museum has a history of motorcycles, a wide variety of their own bikes on display, and in summer months, they have a free Harley "riding" experience that is really fun.
