Intimate restaurant owned by a chef who specialises in Scottish produce - particularly seafood. A firm favourite of ours. Nice place for a romantic meal followed by a stroll along the river back home.

If you love fresh bread and like it well made its worth a visit to this excellent small independent bakery not far from the cottage. Here you can purchase your morning 'rolls', filled sandwiches for picnics or daily bread. Get there early to get the best choices.

This place is relatively new to Inverness but is getting great reviews from my guests. When you can’t be bothered to cook and just want to chill it could be a good option.

Drinks & Nightlife

Atmospheric and lively bar which provides regular traditional live music for free on the ground floor. If you wish to experience a bit of Highland pub culture this is the place for a memorable evening.

This old bar is great for an al fresco pint or glass of wine. It specialises in real ales and has a great malt whisky selection. Small, so always buzzy with a good terrace and a view of the Castle.

This recently opened bar is a great place to hear traditional Scottish music and it's run by Bruce MacGregor: a talented and well-known traditional Scottish musician! They also offer the Highland Whisky Experience where you can sample the best of the amber nectar on Monday and Thursday evenings with those who know what they're talking about. They also serve really excellent bar meals in their restaurant. Bookings for the whisky experience and more information: highlandmaltwhiskyexperience.co.uk

Newly opened and a place I’ve yet to sample but getting great reviews from family and friends. Very close to the cottage and the nearest distillery if you’re interested in modern whisky production. The brewery and bar look rather inviting too!

A must see on any Highland visit. Hunt for Nessie the monster as you enjoy an amazing cruise on photogenic Loch Ness visiting historic Urquhart Castle and discovering something of the area's history.

The recently renovated and state of the art visitors' centre tells the story of the historic Battle of Culloden in 1746. After visiting the indoor exhibition site you will have the opportunity to walk on the actual site of the battle and see the grave markers which mark where fallen clansmen were hastily buried alongside others of their clan. Transport can be arranged via the Tourist Office. There is an extensive car park for those taking their own transport.

Purchase tickets for this very well run cruise of either the Caledonian Canal AND Loch Ness with a stop off at Urquhart Castle or alternatively pick the ferry up at The Clansman Hotel on the shores of the loch for the Loch and Castle visit only.

Something completely different! Set up in 1960s, an alternative community attempting to live an eco & more peaceful lifestyle. Alternative cafe/shop/concert space. Interesting. Near pretty village.

Dores Inn is a fabulous old pub on the banks of Loch Ness on the outskirts of the village of Dores. It has a tiny but very popular bar and serves amazing food in the small adjoining dining room. The restaurant is always booked up so its definitely advisable to book a table if you choose to lunch here. Recently they have started a shuttle bus between Inverness and Dores to transport customers to and from this very popular venue. A relatively recent addition is the al-fresco wooden 'bar' which has a fantastic view of the loch and allows you to sit outside with your drink and do a bit of Nessie spotting.

Shopping

Excellent independent shop selling quality Scottish gifts with the emphasis on craft-made items. Plenty of Orkney influences as the owner is from the Orkney Islands. Traditional Shetland/Orkney knitwear is featured but they also sell Orkney ice cream and fudge. Small shop with friendly staff and plenty of lovely gift ideas.

This second-hand and antiquarian bookstore is a delightful space being a converted church and situated in the 'old town' area of Inverness. In the winter there is a roaring log stove to welcome customers. Throughout the year the bookshop cafe is open serving tea, coffee, soup, sandwiches and delicious home baking. the cafe is to be found on the internal gallery which is accessed via a spiral staircase.

As the name suggests this centrally located covered market is a Victorian shopping mall now serving the shopping needs of locals and tourists alike. Most of the small outlets that work out of the Victorian Market are sole traders and the eclectic mix includes a bagpipe maker, a kilt shop, a chocolatier , a crafts/knitting shop, a model shop and a fresh fish/game shop. It has a unique atmosphere and is definitely worth a visit.
