Well worth a day trip with riverside and woodland walks with a ford through the river and a wonderful little church which peels hymn tunes on its bells. It also has a smokehouse called The Sail serving coffee and light meals and snacks, an art gallery and artist studios and a unique Shell Museum. Locally blended Grey Seal coffee is produced her and supplies much of North Norfolk. The Birdscapes art gallery is also worth a visit. Birders will also like the Cley Spy shop on the same site which sells everything an ornithologist might need from binoculars, telescopes and clothing.

Best place for sausage rolls, probably in the UK. But it has so much more. Good range of food and wine including fresh bread, homemade ready meals and soups and the entire range you would expect in a delicatessen.

Natural Surroundings is our little secret. It is a wooden cafe in the woods next door to Bayfield Hall - just follow signs for the hall and look for the Wildflower Centre. Lovely quiet garden for a snack and drink in the woods with trees full of birdsong. Simon and Anne, who run the cafe, are wildflower experts and Simon has published several books on flowers and birds.

Stunning building and concert venue. Well worth a visit and it is an excuse to go next door to The Parlour which is open seven days a week (closed on Monday) for breakfast, lunch or tea and much in between. It also sells 'raw' milk and locally produced cheese, yogurts and other produce.

Drinks & Nightlife

Good beer and great value if you have a large appetite. My favourite is whale and chips - well the haddock and chips is enormous - washed down with a pint of IPA which is brewed in Southwold, Suffolk. Huge range of all homemade food. Very busy early evening as many tourists eat there but fine about 8 pm onwards when the locals pop in.

This is run by the Royal British Legion but everyone is welcome. They have a bar with the best value beers in the village and it is where the locals really do hang out. They have music nights regularly and to see what is on you will have to look at the blackboard outside their car park which is on the High Street.

Sightseeing

A long walk from Cley along the pebbles and sand but worth it for a wonderfully peaceful slog with stunning views out to sea and inland to the coast. You will be greeted by one of the UK's largest seal colonies. Some restrictions during the nesting season as Little Terns lay their eggs in the sand and pebbles. A National Trust warden lives out there during the summer months. An easier way to see Blakeney Point is to take a seal boat trip from Morston. Terrific hour long trip. Worth every penny as the crew tell you about the history and topics of interest in the area.

Thursford Museum is one of the largest collections of steam engines and traction engines in the world along with funfair rides and organs. Great attraction with shopping and food. But what cannot be missed is the Thursford Christmas Spectacular - a traditional song, dance and humour variety show which is so good it sells tickets more than a year in advance. If you are in Blakeney any time between November 6 and December 23 you really ought to get there. It is stunning and makes you feel good. The Royals go every year but you must book in advance. https://www.thursford.com/christmas-spectacular/

Binham Abbey, a ruin dating back to Benedictine times, is still used as a parish church. There is a walk around the ruins with signs explaining what was there and the church inside is beautiful. The abbey makes stunning pictures along in a field and you can get unpasteurised or raw milk from the farm next door. Good pub in the village too.

A disused aircraft gunnery training building which makes your hair curl thinking how things worked in the Second World War. Very interesting little museum which explains its role and how Langham housed hundreds of airmen and women during the war. There is a collection of highly informative information boards outside the building which is a great place for a quiet picnic on the tables which also act as information boards.

Parks & Nature

The owners of Bayfield Hall - a spectacular country house - have created permissive footpaths across their farms. You can enjoy woodland walks, stroll to the lake with cattle grazing nearby and see one of England's new rivers, created in the last five years. The paths go through undulating countryside with a wide range of trees. Bayfield Hall also has an antiques centre and a cafe and they run a farmers' market once a month. You will have to check their website www.bayfieldhall.com/ to see when it is on.

Essentials

This store stocks everything with a range stretching from value foods to local artisan products. Food, drink, hardware, bakery, postcards, tide tables, ready meals etc. The range is huge and among the local produce try locally produced natural yoghurt. Delicious. Spar has a cash machine, Post Office and newspapers and magazines for rainy days...not that we get those in Blakeney.

Entertainment & Activities

Grab a line and bucket from our under stairs cupboard or buy a new one from the Spar supermarket, along with some bacon or cheese as bait, and go crabbing. Drop your baited line over the edge of the quay outside the Blakeney Hotel and then wait for a tug and you will gently pull your crab up and pop it in your bucket. Tip them back after your fishing expedition and the crabs will do it all over again the next day. Blakeney Hotel itself is great value for a more formal meal with linen cloths, well-trained waiters and a great view across the saltmarshes as you dine. Unmissable.

A gallery at Manor Farm Barns in Glandford which concentrates on a rich variety of paintings in many different mediums but with birds and wildlife at its core. The gallery is conveniently next door to the Art Cafe and to Cley Spy which provides everything an ornithologist could possibly require from binoculars, telescopes and clothing.
