Food Scene

A very popular student pub with inexpensive and really tasty German meals, easy going and just nice. I love it and so did all of my guests.

The #1 world famous Munich restaurant, see your Lonely Planet. 90 % of the visitors are tourists and the beer is not so great. Avoid unless you want to visit just because it's so famous.

Most popular beer garden hangout / urban paradise for locals and Augustiner is the best Munich brewery. Typical beergarden food or bring your own picnic. The indoors restaurant is also really nice.

You haven't seen Munich really without going to a beer garden. This is where we locals meet friends and socialize with strangers, it's the essence of the Munich lifestyle of "live and let live". Chinaturm is the most famous and most beautifully located beer garden here, right in the middle of English Garden, a huge and awesome park where we all hang out in summer. Not to be missed! And make sure to explore English Garden more and especially watch the famous river surfers at the south tip. Don't try yourself, it's really tricky! As with every beer garden, you can buy local food there or bring your own. The Hofbräu beer they sell there is not that great though but the location makes more than up for that (and non-Bavarians might not taste a big difference anyway). If you're a real beer expert Augustinerkeller would be the place to go instead.

Very beautiful, typical Munich style restaurant with local food, absolutely non-touristy. Best place for tasting Bavarian dishes in the neighborhood. Unfiltered "Kellerbier" from the bottle is very recommended.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is my second home! Very comfy pub, a bit alternative / artistic, really cool staff. Burgers and vegan food, good and cheap wine, regular beer is bad - ask for the "bio" (organic) beer instead. You'll likely meet me if you go there ;-)

My favourite club. Munich's prime freak-out underground disco in the 80s-00s, now less weird but still a great place for neo-disco/electronic. It's a late club: enter at 2 and leave at 7... crawling!

Opened late fourties. All of the then posh interior design is still there but everything is a litte worn out in a most charming way. A really unique place to hang out with the local boheme. I love it!

Sightseeing

World famous, but the most touristy place in Bavaria; we simply leave that place to the tourists and don't go there. Pros: yes. it's very famous and its scenery in the alps is really beautiful. Also, you'll hear some dramatic stories of the "mad king" who had it built, ruined the state with his architectural follies, was forced to resign because of that and drowned under mysterious circumstances shortly after. Cons: totally crowded and somehow fake, as no-one ever lived there and only 1/4th of the rooms have been completed. Alternative: Herrernchiemsee palace, built by the same king, but much more authentic, less tourist-infested and with even greater surroundings. If you visit Neuschwanstein anyway, do bring a picnic as all restaurants there are not worth of what they charge.

Definitely the most impressive and most beautifully located palace in Upper Bavaria and one of the most rewarding day trips you can take from Munich. Commissioned by the same "mad" king that also had Neuschwanstein built, but so much more authentic and interesting; this is where us locals take visitors instead. The palace is located on an island in a big and beautiful lake close to the Alps, so even the one hour train ride to there is spectacular. From the regular train station Prien take the old-timey steam train to the pier in Stock village or just have a nice walk to there (30 min). An hourly ship service will take you from Stock to the island within 15 minutes. Totally recommended and you'll get a very authentic impression of both our arts-and-people-loving former royalty and the gorgeous landscape that makes Bavaria so famous.

Nymphenburg defintely is the most impressive palace within Munich city limits and a must-see place. Continually expanded through the years by Bavarian dukes and kings this is is a very fine specimen of how our former local aristocracy preferred arts, architecture and good living over wars and power struggles. The palace is really huge and walking up to it on the banks of the canal is a truly awesome sight. The state of the palace has been perfectly preserved from Rococo period. You can take a guided tour to the historical rooms which is very recommended if you're interested in arts or history. Most notable are the famous two "beauty galleries" - the guide will tell you incredible stories about the women depicted there but it's all true! But even much nicer is strolling through the huge park, a unique piece of European garden design, there's so much to discover in there! My favourite place for taking guests and telling lots of stories about Bavarian history, culture and mentality. And if you're a cineaste: this is where Resnais shot his enigmatic masterpiece "L'Année dernière à Marienbad"!

Arts & Culture

I'm a nerd for arts! And luckily almost all important art museums are right around the corner, so here goes. Alte Pinakothek has one of the most valuable collections of "old masters" you'll find in Europe, from 14th to 18th century. Has the most comprehensive collection of German Old Masters worldwide (Dürer, Altdorfer, Cranach), incredible Netherlandish and Dutch (my favourite section), huge Flemish collection of Rubens nudies and his contempories and an uniquely high-class Italians selection from Giotto and Leonardo to Tintoretto, Tiepolo and Canaletto, also smaller, but top-notch French and Spanish sections. Luckily Bavarian kings were much more interested in arts than in war and so we have this incredible collection of masterpieces until today! I used to work there as a warden while I was studying and I believe that I still know every single painting in detail ;-)

Neue Pinalothek is the follow-up to Alte Pinakothek (see below). Also founded by art-savvy Bavarian kings, this museum has then-contemporary art - 19th century - and is one of the most important museums worldwide for this century: classicism, romanticism, impressionism, symbolism, art nouveau... all not quite my piece of cake I must confess and the current post-modern building (the original classicist one was destroyed in WW II) is a bit bleak. But if you have special interest in that era this collection is one of the best in the world. Also has really great temporary exhibitions so I visit often anyways.
