Charming old pub, converted largely to dining. Relaxed and friendly, nicely decorated. Plenty of space. The menu is really excellent, fresh ingredients, creative cooking, yet hearty sized proportions... probably the best 'pub food' menu around. A good idea to book in advance if you want to be sure of a table, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch.

The Swan at Wedmore is a great pub to get a meal if you find yourself in this part of the county. Stylishly decorated, warm and friendly atmosphere. Events happen here too... check out details on their website. Wedmore is a pretty village to wander and admire some of the prettiest cottage architecture in these parts.

Drinks & Nightlife

I can't quite believe AirB&B don't have 'pub' as a category! But pub this most certainly is, and our local one, just 5 minutes walk up the road. Depending on the time and day of the week it can be quiet or heaving. Friday night is especially lively, and a good laugh if you'd like to strike up a conversation with the locals. Simon the landlord is friendly and helpful. The pub also serves good pub food in its restaurant (lunch and evenings), but nothing fancy. Fish and chips, eggs and ham, ploughmans salads etc.

This venue (in converted barn) is open all day, serving great food too. A little on the expensive side, but with the free-to-enter Hauser & Wirth modern art gallery attached, and Piet Oudolf garden out back, it's a price worth paying. The bar is a fun and lively place to hang out, with a trendy rustic-urban vibe. At the weekend it gets busy, with lots of Londoners down for the weekend. Friday night is live DJ and dancing. Check out their website, and also the Hauser & Wirth Somerset site, for what's on...

Parks & Nature

Converted from former peat farming land, this large nature reserve is now a world-famous place for bird life. Walk the paths between the reeds, find a hideout, and wait patiently to spot an amazing array of bird and other wild life. Don't forget your binoculars! Check out the RSPB Somerset website for more details

Sightseeing

Glastonbury Tor is one of the most iconic British landmarks, symbolising to many what makes this part of the country special... the spiritual, the geographical, nature and its other-worldliness. Many myths and legends surround the Tor, but it is also rich in historical facts. Check these out at the Glastonbury Abbey Museum before hand. Or just stretch your legs, get to the top, and take in one of the best 360 degree views in the country. If you're adventurous, try it at dawn or sunset for the best time of all.

One of the most impressive Cathedrals in the land makes Wells officially the smallest city in Britain. Whilst visiting, spare time yo look around the Bishops Palace and gardens too.

A natural phenomenon, Cheddar Gorge is our local 'Grand Canyon', and has to be driven down to fully appreciate. At the bottom, make a visit to the famous caves, and, no doubt, taste some original cave-matured cheddar cheese!

Arts & Culture

Just reopened, after a 3 year refurbishment program, this charming museum tells us all about the life of Somersets rural people, past and present. With many artifacts, skillfully presented to bring different trades to life, the SRLM is a delight not to be missed! Based in a converted farm house, with a huge ancient tithe barn and contemporary extension, the buildings themselves are worth seeing in their own right. There is a great cafe and shop here too. This is also the best place to park if you want to walk up the Tor.

Set in 6 acres of parkland, right in the centre of Glastonbury, the Abbey is a must-see for anyone interested in medieval history up to the Tudors, and the Disolution of the Monasteries. The Abbey was once the richest and most important in the land, outside of London, and its museum and in-costume guides give a vivid account of what life was like then.

One of the finest National Trust properties, this Elizabethan architectural gem is also set in impressive grounds. Upstairs, in the Long Gallery, is a large collection of Tudor and Elizabethan portraits, part of the National a Portrait Gllery collection.

This beautiful old house and fabulous garden are very romantic. One of a number of great National Trust houses in the area, this might just be my personal favourite. Just 10 minutes drive from the cottage.

Shopping

Kilver Court is owned by Roger Saul, the entrepreneur who started Mulberry (the luxury handbag company). In fact, the Mulberry factory shop is right next door. Many designer brands are sold here at discount prices, and there is also a fab farm shop, plant nursery and spectacular gardens attached. There is also a great cafe.

Started by the Clarks shoes empire, and next to their HQ, Clarks Village has a large number of high street brands selling mostly discounted clothing, shoes, accessories, sports and homeware. There are several eateries here including Pizza Express, and Pret A Manger.

There is nowhere quite like Glastonbury High Street! It has largely remained untouched by mass brands, and has developed its own culture of independent shops and cafes, many serving the 'spiritual pilgrims' to the area. All the shops are painted in different colours, and its medieval history shines through, with the Abbey behind. Originally a market town, Glastonbury has an excellent independent butcher and baker, and has an outdoor and indoor market every Tuesday morning (Town Hall and Assembly Rooms), and a Farmer's Market every fourth Saturday of the month. There is a fabulous large health food store, Earthfare, at the top of the High Street.
