For an authentic Mauritian experience in a romantic setting, this elegant, candlelit restaurant with silver service is one of the island's best and is a popular spot for weddings. It is a beautifully restored colonial mansion dating back to the 1800s, with an authentic stone water fountain, beautiful Banyan tree and a spiral staircase set among the verdant hills and sugar fields of Domaine de Bel Ombre in the unspoiled southwest, the source of 90 per cent of the ingredients used in the kitchen. It serves à la carte fusion food - think wild boar braised with red wine sauce and taro root - and authentic island dishes. Opt for a table on the terrace on a clear starry night.

The restaurant belonging to the interactive museum L’Aventure du Sucre is a surprisingly good find in an area where there is a dearth of eateries. It specialises in Mauritian fusion cuisine with a modern twist - think red snapper curry with coconut milk and traditional garnishes or lamb tajine with breadfruit medallions flavoured with cardamon. Dine in elegant but unfussy surrounds, or alfresco where you can linger over your à la carte dessert under a flamboyan tree.

This good value table d'hote set on an old sugar plantation, 10 minutes' drive from Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens, offers a prix fixe Creole menu and à la carte grills to a mix of tourists and locals. What's unusual is its collection of vintage cars including an Austin 16, Churchill's car, and a Wolseley 'police car' scattered among the fruits and spices used in its dishes. For the best view, and the sound of birdsong, opt for one of the four tables on the veranda.

There has been a reasonably-priced rustic restaurant under the canopy of this ancient Banyan tree on Ile aux Cerfs ever since I can remember, only they've now banished the giant tortoises we used to ride on as kids. Food is fast and simple in this incarnation offering a modern Indian dining experience under open-sided thatched cabanas which keep off the sun yet let in the breeze, so you can make haste back to the beach. Run by Sun Resorts, good value thalis or combination platters are the house speciality, and there are a few western food options on the kids' menu.

To taste real home cooking, stop at this simple family-run table d’hote, with orange splatter paint walls and photographs of visits from famous reggae singers. Front of house is the charming Rico I’Intelligent, the village mayor, known locally as the President. His wife cooks up old family recipes in the kitchen, while his sister in law waits the tables. The set menu includes chicken, fish (occasionally wild boar), with five vegetables and rice, and desert. The value is unbeatable, because he doesn’t pay commission to taxi drivers (usually added to your bill).
