Today, there is only one operating brewery in Gilpin County, Colorado. Dostal Alley Brewpub & Casino, located on Main Street in Central City, is celebrating nearly 150 years of the advent of brewing in the “Little Kingdom of Gilpin”. During Colorado’s historic gold and silver rush years from 1859 to the early 1900s as many as fifteen different breweries made beer for thousands of thirsty miners in the “Pointylands.”

This two-story stone building, built in 1870, served as a school until 1968. Since 1970 it has been home to the Gilpin History Museum. The museum houses collections related to the history of Gilpin County, with exhibits focusing on life in and the people of Gilpin County from the 1860s to the present. Displays include the Mountain Submarine, a recreated Main Street, the Mining Room, a school room, and other special exhibits related to the county's colorful history.

A great little museum with very friendly staff, who show great enthusiasm for mining history in the area.
There are also some interesting exhibits and a lot of them can be explored in person or demonstrated.
The gold panning was great fun and very addictive for adults and children alike. It's very exciting to see tiny flakes as a reward for your efforts.

Sightseeing
The Coeur d'Alene Mine Shaft House serves as a constant reminder of Gilpin County's mining heritage. Developed in 1885, the Coeur d'Alene produced ore into the 1940s. Tours of the building, which is perched on the brow of Academy Hill, allow visitors to see antique mining equipment, the inner workings of a mine shaft house, and panoramic views of Central City and Black Hawk.

The Carousel of Happiness is Nederland Colorado's magical menagerie featuring 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel, turning to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. Scott Harrison was a 19-year-old Marine Gunner serving in Vietnam where the gift of a music box and the image of a carousel in a mountain meadow calmed him. Many years later, after rescuing an abandoned carousel, he began carving what would become a whimsical menagerie. It took him a little over 26 years to hand-carve the 56 animals and a dedicated group of volunteers helped bring the carousel to life in the little mountain town west of Boulder.
