The basement has a big food court offering western and Japanese desserts, bakeries, pickles, sushi, and everything else. Often there are free samples to be had. We recently ate at a small bakery there, "Le Petit Mec" which was surprisingly good and very economical. (Much better than the big "Pauls" next to it.)

Getting Around

If you are traveling within Kansai, the Hankyu line is cheaper than JR. It is also much more convenient to our property.

If you are coming from KIX, a good option to reach Kyoto is the Yasaka taxi shuttle. It costs around 3500 yen per person and will take you right to our door. A nice option after a transatlantic flight. It neds to be booked at least 2 days before your arrival.

Parks & Nature

The river! This is the main green artery of the city, and there is always lots to see, from herons, hawks, and egrets to courting couples in yukata to students practicing dance moves to an impressive range of eccentric old men. There are lots of people in the Shijo vicinity, as well as traditional outdoor terrace restaurants. The further north you go the quieter, cooler, and greener it gets, and by Kitaoji there are some very nice mountain views. There are walking paths along both banks for about 5 miles north (which is where we live). Going south is not recommended as it is rather industrial. If you keep walking north for about 12 miles, still following the river, you will find yourself deep in the mountains, with a gorge, waterfalls, thatched roof villages, rice fields, shrines, and temples. Very popular with cyclists.

If you have time, this is a good way to get into the mountains, by the eizan line leaving from Demachiyanagi station. Impressive old cedar trees. There is a nice (and steep) walking circuit in the hills that connects a few shrines/temples, plus some tradiitional on-river dining places and a rather expensive onsen.

This city is worth a visit to experience a laid-back modern Japanese city without the crowds. The hills behind shinkansen station are very, very nice for hikes. Especially worth taking a look if you have a JR pass. (I think it would be a more enjoyable day trip than going to Nara.)
