Big Bear Cafe is a neighborhood institution. Excellent coffee and an interesting menu, with a beautiful ivy-covered patio to boot. Visit Sunday mornings in the summer and you can swing through the farmers market held on the same block.

The closest thing we'll get to NOLA in Washington. Jojo's has exceptional Cajun-inspired food and some truly talented local jazz musicians, especially on Friday's and Saturdays. It can get very loud downstairs, so if you're looking for something more low-key be sure to sit upstairs.

This is a weekend morning walk staple - head north to Brookland to see the Basilica, or south to NOMA to pick up groceries or board the Metro. The MBT runs parallel to the Metro/Amtrak tracks - keep an eye out for the excellent graffiti artwork on the eastern wall, which starts just south of R St.
