The lake is also known as Carcassonne beach and is a 10 minute car drive or a longer bus route away. It is a great place to cool off but gets very busy in summer.

My favourite time to visit is after dark when there are fewer people and a more magical atmosphere. To appreciate the scale of la cité walk in between the 2 sets of walls and notice the different ages of stonework. See if you can spot the unique tower with a chimmney (one of the 52).

From Easter to Halloween you can take a cruise down the canal from the port in front of the station. There are plenty of stretches to walk beside too.

Guide des Quartiers

Otherwise known as la ville basse, is supposedly the largest bastide in France. It has long since lost its surrounding walls to make way for the broad boulevards, but you can still see three of the remaining bastions. This area has a very wide range of architectural styles from medieaval to Arte Nouveau.

Saint Gimer is within the neighbourhood of La Trivalle and Barbacane which is at the foot of the ramparts. Spend time to wander around this area of narrow streets and clustered houses which has a feel very different to the rest of Carcassonne.
