Food Scene

Located near the heart of the Carmel Market, it's our favorite lunch place. Everything is as fresh as it gets, and the street is also bustling and hustling. It's a no-frills restaurant, with incredibly tasty food. Our favorite dishes are the Market Antipasti, Kebab, and the Roastbeef in Challa-bread. If you're feeling like having a drink, we recommend an Arak with "Limonana" (Limonana means Lemonade with Nana, or Mint, leaves).

The Manta Ray restaurant is located right on the beach. It's expensive, and usually you have to book a table in advance. But -- right behind the restaurant, you'll find their beach bar / cafe. It's a great place to have your morning coffee, or sunset beer, overlooking the beach.

We LOVE Indian food - and Tandoori is THE best to eat Indian food in Tel Aviv. It's owned by Indians, and even the staff is Indian (or from countries near India). The Vegetarian Tally is a cost-effective meal that's sure to leave you satisfied. For a spicy dish, ask for the Lamb Vindaloo (even if you can't find it on the menu :-) ). When we say spicy - we mean SPICY!

On Friday's there's a wonderfully fresh Ceviche & Beer stand at the corner of Yehya Kapah & Khayim Khavshsush St. It's a little known delicious gem - if you love Ceviche, make sure to check it out at least once.

Kerem HaTeimanim neighborhood (literal translation would be "The Yemenite's Vineyard") is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tel Aviv. It's rustic and raw, full of restaurants that offer home-style cooking. Don't be off-put by the simple looking restaurants with plastic chairs and tables -- the food is delicious, fresh, and unique. If it's not too hot, try a Yemeni soup. Most places will be pretty cheap.

Tel Aviv is hot, so having some ice cream is almost always a good idea. And "Anita" has THE BEST ice cream! Don't be afraid if you see a lot of people inside -- just walk in, and make eye contact with one of the people behind the counter - there's usually one available to help you, and once you catch their attention you'll be eating delicious ice-cream in no time. Try the Pecan & White Chocolate flavor! (if you prefer frozen yogurt -- just continue upwards on Shabazi Street to #32 to find Anita's fro-yo shop!)

Drinks & Nightlife

Because it's the place to drink unique, fresh beers in a stool at the middle of the street :-) Sounds weird, but this place is PACKED almost all the time. Great atmosphere, and you're sure to see some characters walking down the street.

Sightseeing

The Port of Jaffa, and the ancient city of Jaffa located next to it, have been there for hundreds of years. It's a wonderful place to visit if you're into history and ancient architecture. It's also packed with restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, and the occasional designer exhibition. If you love sea-food, you can't beat the 39 ILS (that's about $10 US) Seafood Mix they serve at the fish store at the end of the harbor. No tables - just tasty, fresh seafood served to-go.

If you have time to visit Haifa - don't miss out on the Bahai Gardens. It's just stunningly beautiful, and truly one of the marvels Israel has to offer. You can get to Haifa by train, and then take a taxi to the Bahai Gardens.

Shopping

The oldest, and biggest, shopping mall in Tel Aviv. Some say it's ugly, others say it's wonderful - but no one dares ignore it! :-) You'll find chain stores like Castro (Israel clothing brand), alongside weird/unique shops, tattoo parlors, and really anything you can think of. On Fridays there's a packed food market at the Northern part of the mall on the first floor (just follow the crowds and scent to find it :-) ).

Unique clothing from a Tel Aviv-based designers' collection. You'll find unique items here, and the store itself is also beautifully designed. They actually have two locations on King George St. -- be sure to visit both as each holds a different collection of items.

Parks & Nature

The Yarkon Park extends from the Yarkon river mouth to the east. There are walking and cycling trails. You can rent peddle boat or a kayak and row the Yarkon river (swimming is not recommended - the water aren't dangerous, but they're also not the cleanest). You can walk for hours along the park, or just find a nice shaded spot to read a book on the grass. It takes around 30 minutes to walk from the apartment to the park, but it's a short bicycle ride or taxi drive away.

It's the nearest beach to the apartment -- just walk along Allenby Street heading north-west for 8-10 minutes, and you're there! There's a beach restaurant, and if this specific beach is crowded just walk in either directions along the Tel Aviv promenade to one of the other beaches. Sunsets at the beach are beautiful -- make sure to watch at least one!
