Food Scene

Hackney is a hub of trendy eateries, and with two Michelin stars under its belt, there’s every reason to venture east to sample its tasty wares. Pidgin is the first Hackney hangout to be awarded a coveted star, and if you previously attended their ever-changing supper club – The Secret Larder – you’ll know exactly why they won the award. Now serving up a four-course set menu that changes weekly, the friendly supper club ambience remains, but its new permanent residency means, thankfully, it’s definitely here to stay.

Butcher's by day, but as soon as night falls, Hill & Szrok transforms into Broadway Market’s busiest dining spot, with an endless queue. An intimate setting – there are only 25 seats and they don’t take bookings – if you can handle the wait, you won’t be disappointed. Every cut of meat is cooked to perfection on the charcoal grill or spit roast. The high-end blackboard steaks come highly recommended, and the wine selection is expertly paired to match the flavours of your dish.

From the cool, warehouse-style décor to the addictive slices (they churn out crisp-based pizzas for the glitzy, mirror-clad oven), there’s nothing not to like about this hipster Italian hangout. Favourites on the menu include black anise pepperoni with mozzarella and rocket, and lardo with spinach and egg; but their ever-changing roster of pizza creations mean there’s always a newbie to surprise and delight.

Be prepared to queue for Patty & Bun’s unrivalled burgers, but once you’re in, you’ll be there for the long haul. The new outpost, positioned next to Rawduck and Lardo on Richmond Road, boasts diner-inspired style, with big communal tables and a buzzing atmosphere; plus, there's outdoor seating to enjoy during the balmy summer months. Tuck into classics like their Ari Gold cheeseburger or their Greek-inspired Lambshank Redemption, served in a toasted brioche with buttermilk baby courgettes, pickled aubergine, cumin aioli and crumbly feta. Perfect hangover food.

Drinks & Nightlife

A one-stop-shop for work and day-to-night drinking, Martello Hall is east London’s newest late-night haunt, providing a creative space during the day for freelancers to hot-desk in style before transforming into a glamorous drinking spot in the evening. Head downstairs to the restaurant, where stone-baked pizzas and slow-cooked meats are served up in spades, and once you’ve finished, there’s a collection of gin-based cocktails that are too good to pass up.

If the killer cocktails and cool New York vibes don’t lure you into this dimly lit drinking den, then its sister venue, Kansas Smitty – an underground jazz bar – is bound to get you in the mood. The cool basement venue has its own in-house band and plenty of speakeasy-style fun on offer.
