Parks & Nature

How can you go past Dovrefjell - it's the holy cow for all Norwegians ;) Climb Snøhetta, see the musk ox, and be amazed by nature in all her glory. We recommend the walk from Kongsvold via Snøhetta to Åmotdalshytta and further to Loennchenbua, Gammelsetra and up Svarthaugen to Gjøra. A view you will never forget.

All the national parks in Norway are breathtaking and each has its own flair and highlights. Jotunheimen is renown for having the majority of Norway's highest peaks (Galdhøpiggen), as well as trails such as Besseggen. But there's more to Jotunheimen than these two :) If you're lucky you'll even see the reindeer herds and other native animals. Well, you could spend forever exploring Jotunheimen and that's not such a bad thing eh? :)

If you want to go on a hike or two while in Gjøvik, then head to the mountains, e.g. Øverby and Østbyhøgda. Next to Øverby sports park is Eiktunet, the outdoor cultural museum. In summer and winter both are perfect for ski tours, trail running tours, and hikes that will bring you up close and personal with Gjøvik nature. Østbyhøgda also has a lookout over Gjøvik and the Mjøsa. Well worth driving up for.

Landåsbygda may be small but it has a cultural trail that is close to 1,000 years old. Den gamle Ridevegen does a loop from Landåsvatnet down to Fluberg and back (via Bergegarda and/or Vestrumsbygda). The view of the Dokka delta is not to be missed; plus visit the lucky folk who live at Granum and Raaum farms.

Spåtind (1414 m) is a peak that you can climb up to in Langsua national park. It is part of the Synnfjell massif, and is also a cross country skiers paradise in winter. Langsua is the national park found in the middle between Valdres and Lillehammer offering stunning nature, fantastic views, and more. The drive through Etnedal is also highly recommended. What a fantastic place to live. The old King's Road also goes through Etnedal valley up over Tonsåsen on the way to Valdres and further to Bergen. That's why this area is so special, people have been travelling through to get to the west coast for aeons.

Arts & Culture

This is the home of the national costume and national musical instrument collections. Also the place to go during summer or all year round for workshops in traditional arts and crafts. It also has an outdoor museum with buildings from all over Valdres. Fantastic place to be on the 17th of May, when Norway's national day is celebrated. See Norway come alive.
