Food Scene

The historic Depot Restaurant is a fine dinner house with superior food and service. It is just the best in the area. It is busy with locals as well as visitors so reservations are highly recommended and we can do that for you. It is open daily. We like to request the Chef's Table is it is available. The Depot is a Victorian-era train station, intimate and we think it is very romantic. We can offer guests a 10% entree discount for this great spot! The Depot is only open for dinner.

Only open Tuesday through Saturdays, this cafe is excellent. Located on the main highway in a sweet yellow house, the menu is great and you can get the famous razor clams there! There is a nightly fresh seafood stew that is different every night, but you can also buy an excellent burger, great clam chowder and delicious home made ice cream for dessert.

For buying oysters, chowder and sitting on their deck with a glass of wine, along the Willapa Bay, this is a must-not-miss place to go. We love it there and love the owner, Dan Driscoll, a third generation oysterman.

The Lost Roo is a beautiful sports bar with seven large screen TV's and some of the best "bar food" you will find anywhere. The Roo has a "real" chef and the most amazing chowder with smoked steelhead. Thursday night is prime rib night (really affordable!!) and they smoke their own fish & prime rib. In the warm months, there is a huge sheltered outdoor deck. There is a separate part for families. We recommend sitting in the "bar" part where there are no children. When we have younger visitors, we sit in the restaurant part. A favorite place to watch our local favorite team, the Seahawks, Spring Madness, the Superbowl , the place is big enough for non-sports lovers too!

This is a real icon in the City of Long Beach, about 6 blocks from Boreas. Bakery items in numbers you may have never seen. Great deli-sandwiches and soups. If you are a old-style bakery traditionalist who is not interested in a "gourmet" bake shop and want to eat old-fashioned donuts, cinnamon twists and maple bars, this may be your place!

Parks & Nature

There are two spectacular lighthouses, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Cape D's Waikiki Beach, hiking, whale-watching, birding, biking. Our favorite Park in the world is 4 miles from Boreas Inn. PERFECT for storm watching, particularly Waikiki Beach, so named for almost as long as the "other" Waikiki Beach.

Located in Cape Disappointment State Park, this lighthouse is about 15 minutes from Boreas. The best place to whale watch, wave watch and look for wildlife and seabirds, Bell's View walk is located right by the parking lot and it takes five minutes through old growth forest along a paved trail to get to a viewing platform with a view up 28 miles of coast line and in the distance, on a clear day, is the faraway Olympic Mountain range. The walk down the road to the lighthouse takes 10 minutes and the views are stunning. Walk back through the trail to the lighthouse tenders houses. Really a must-see!

This beach has been named "Waikiki" almost as long as the other Waikiki. Of course there were shipwrecked Hawaii sailors involved in the naming. The BEST place to watch giant waves on a stormy day, even from your car. The best place for dramatic photography of those waves! The driftwood is gigantic, the view across the beach of the Cape D lighthouse is stunning. Really a perfect spot. It is closed in huge storms.

The hiking trail to this iconic lighthouse is at the base of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape D State Park. The path winds by Deadman's Cove, one of the prettiest places in the Northwest particularly on a sunny day when the water is twinkling. The walk to the lighthouse is about 5/8ths of a mile each way and eventually takes you up the hill to the lighthouse that is still occupied by the US Coast Guard, so only on a couple days of the year can you go inside. But the views from outside are some of the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from high atop the cliffs. A great whale and fishing boat watching, as well as bird watching spot!

The refuge's Visitor's Center is up highway 101 about 15 minutes from Boreas Inn. The "Cutthroat trail", home of cutthroat trout is an excellent 1 hour hike though old growth forest, through several ecosystems, with excellent non-invasive interpretive signage. The Artwalk trail is a boardwalk trail right at the Vistior's Center is a five minute walk over wetlands with some fine outdoor artwork. Easy to navigate and a very different ecosystem than the beach. It smells good and the trickling water sounds and forest ecology is refreshing and beautiful. A huge bird watching spot with hundreds of migrating seabirds. The refuge is free.

The North Jetty Tap Room is the home to our local brews, Leadbetter Red, great IPA's, guest brews, ciders, Thursday night trivia, wonderful pretzels, peanuts and hot dogs. Owned by good friends, their brews are excellent and you can bring in your own food either from the adjacent food cart, 42nd Street Cafe across the street, or whatever you wish. There is occasional music and always a friendly crowd. This is one of our favorite drop by places to see people we love.

Arts & Culture

A gorgeously placed museum at the top of a cliff overlooking the Mouth of the Columbia River and the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. Probably the best of the nation's Lewis and Clark centers, it explains this area's place in the history books and provides one of the best views on the Pacific Northwest Coast. 15 minutes from Boreas.

This place is wonderful and a home the Columbia River Lightship and usually a large Coast Guard vessel that docks there because it sits right on the Columbia River. The theater is spectacular with revolving shows and the exhibits are continually updated. We love this museum!! Less than 30 m minutes from Boreas in Astoria, OR. A place where you can spend many hours!
