Walking, running or paddle boarding

Barafundle Bay is a beautiful bay less than 30min a drive from Tenby. You can’t park directly at the bay (which tends to make it quieter), instead set directions for Stackpole Quay car park. There are tea rooms and bathrooms located at the car park. You can use the PayByPhone App for the majority of Pembrokeshire National Trust car parks (that includes all the car parks along the coastal path) but please note there is no cell service at Stackpole Quay so it’s useful to take £3-£5 cash as cards are not accepted. Barafundle Bay is a 5-10min walk over the top of the cliffs, or if you enjoy paddle boarding I can highly recommended paddling around. As you can see from the pictures it’s very scenic and there’s normally a few boarders launching from Stackpole. There’s further rock formations on the other side of the bay but please be aware of relatively strong currents beyond the cliff edge (out of the bay). Remember there’s poor cellular coverage so please say safe and let someone know your plans when at sea and expected return time. For a scenic walk I recommend the circle from the car park, over Barafundle Bay and along the cliffs to Broadhaven then back via the Lily Ponds and seven arch bridge to Stalkpole Quay. About 7.5km - 10km depending how much time you spend walking round the lily ponds.

St. Govans Chapel is a tiny chapel built into the limestone cliffs near Bosherston. Constructed sometime in the 13th/14th century and dedicated to an Irish abbot St. Govan. You can walk here from a number of car parks - see my map “start points” for car parks. From Stakepole Quay car park it’s 4.2miles along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. If walking is not for you St Govans car park is right next to the chapel, there is a flight of steps to reach the chapel. A good option is to park at St Govans and then follow the Pembrokeshire Coastal path to the West, 3.1 miles will get you to Stack Rocks and the Green Bridge of Wales. Just remember to double that as you’ll have to walk back!

The Green Bridge of Wales and Stack Rocks are another of my recommendations along the coastal path. A popular spot to witness the large quantities of breading seabirds: guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes. This scenic spot is around 3.1miles from St Govans and 7.3miles from Stackpole Quay. There is a car park (Stack Rocks) alongside the Green Bridge but be aware that sometimes the road to this car park is closed when the M.O.D. Base is being used for training.

There are too many beautiful sections of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path for me to list but I can suggest the following: 1. Download the PayByPhone Ap for a convenient method for all coastal path car parks, and the majority of car parks in Pembrokeshire. 2. Keep £3-£5 cash in your car for places where phone signal is poor (Stackpole Quay) as the parking machines do not take card payment. 3. Some car parks allow over night parking but not all, so check first if this is your intention. 4. You can download a handy mileage chart to help plan your walks: https://www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Coast_path_mileage_ENG.pdf Photos are FreshWater West Beach and the rocks either side of Barafundle Bay.

My favourite place to paddle board is on North Beach, directly opposite the apartment so very convenient but you do have to navigate your board down the steps! If you don’t own a paddle board you can rent one on the beach from Outer Reef. On a hot summer day North beach, like most beaches, gets busy. However, if you paddle to the far left of the beach and just round the corner you will find it’s suddenly quiet and tranquil. There’s a few small sandy coves only accessible via the water.

Food scene

Delicious Indian cuisine with great sea views. They don’t have an alcohol licence but allow you to take your own with you.

Saltys Beach bar is my favourite lunch spot. Delicious food right on the beach, ideal after a long walk to the end of the beach and over the cliffs along the Coastal Path.
