Our number 1 recommendation for a great meal nearby! Fresh local seafood well-made and welcoming atmosphere. Located in the stunning historic village of Bamburgh, with nice beach and castle to explore (but can get busy with tourists in summer). Much loved & popular so recommend booking in advance on www.thepottedlobster.co.uk/bamburgh

Right on our doorstep is the unique border town Berwick-upon-Tweed. Plenty to explore - our highlights are to walk around the Elizabethan walls with great views, stroll down to the lighthouse, and enjoy the independent shops & food/ drink scene on Bridge Street. Would skip the High Street/ Marygate, best parking is on Bridge Street.

Beautiful views and good walks if you're willing to explore (check out Walk 3: North Beaches here https://holy-island.uk/walking-routes-around-holy-island-lindisfarne-our-favourite-walks/). The most stunning beach! Hidden gem. Miles & miles of sand, sea and sky make this the perfect quiet spot to escape, walk or play (for kids, racing down the dunes is a must!). 5 mins drive or an easy ~45 mins walk from the cottage. Directions to drive: Head to 'Cheswick Sands Car Park' on GoogleMaps. Essentially, head south on the A1 and take the second left (opposite Island View Inn). Then turn left twice, drive through Cheswick farm buildings until the road ends at a small parking area. Directions to walk: Walk up through the farm from the cottage, go right when you hit the road, take the first right & follow down to Cocklawburn beach. Then continue following the road/ track all the way until it forks, take the right fork and follow the cycle path until you reach Cheswick Beach (when the cycle path ends; take the path on the left to cross the dunes to the beach).

Beach on your doorstep! Sweet beach with plenty of sand, sea for a quick dip, and rockpools. Often an ice cream van in summer (disclaimer: not always, but he usually turns up!). Directions from the cottage: Head back through the farm. When you meet the road, turn right. Take the first right, in the dip. Follow the road for a few moments and you'll arrive at Coclawburn beach.

Causeway to Holy Island/ Lindisfarne

Holy Island is a wonderful day out & highly recommend a visit. But, it is essential to plan around when the causeway is open (the road is not passable during high tide)! Crossing times can be found here: www.holyislandcrossingtimes.northumberland.gov.uk

Coastal walk/ cycle to Berwick

Easy coastal route from the cottage to Berwick. Stunning sea views. Walk or cycle, but can get muddy in winter (need wellies/ boots). Directions from the cottage: Go through farm. When you hit the road, turn right. Take the first right towards Cocklawburn Beach. After the rail crossing, take the path that is the first left (when the road bends sharply right). Follow this path all the way until you enter Spittal. Continue to follow the road through Spittal village, along the harbour/ river-side, until you can cross on the Old Bridge. You will now be on Bridge Street, the heart of Berwick.
