Over 250 bird species have been recorded on the Reserve, many of them Winter migrants from Greenland and Arctic Canada or from Scandinavia and Arctic Russia. Greenland White-fronted Geese are the most numerous and important goose species on the reserve and it is for them that it was established. They breed on the western lowlands of Greenland during the summer and winter in Ireland and Scotland from October to March. The North Slob holds about 8,500 or 45% of the current world population of Greenland White-fronted Goose during these months.
The birds and other wildlife on the Reserve can be watched from the 8 metre-tall observation tower and three other hides

Fin and humpback whales are regular visitors to the shores of Dunmore East and the Hook peninsula. Tours can be booked but are more likely to be run on advisory basis (whale and weather dependent).

The gardens consist of around 70 acres of intensively planted woodland garden and a 4 acre walled garden. The owner, the late Mr Ambrose Congreve, was inspired by Mr Lionel de Rothschild’s exceptional garden at Exbury in Hampshire, England.
The entire collection consists of over 3,000 different trees and shrubs, more than 2,000 Rhododendrons, 600 Camellias, 3000 Acer cultivars, 600 conifers, 250 climbers and 1,500 herbaceous plants.
