The Ski Resort. Be sure to reserve tickets in advance on busy weekend. Take the shuttle from town to avoid the parking fee that is Fri, Say, Sun, Holidays (free after 2pm every day), or if you prefer to drive, you can park in the lots a shuttle ride away. **insider tip: you are taking a shuttle either way, so sometimes it's nice to just take the shuttle once from town and back.

Spruce Side. Great indoor lunch, usually a band weekends starting at 230-3 Also good on skating rink side for restaurant called Whistle Pig for rackette (like fondue). The Lodge hotel next door is also cool and fun to visit. It is not to be confused with the ski resort, this is the adjacent, sort-of mixed in to the Spruce area. It is a hotel run by Hilton. You can wander freely in the lobby, which I recommend, especially for Aprés for a drink in the cozy fireplace chairs. The property where you ski, leave your belongings and eat upstairs at the Spruce Lodge, ice skate, and the Resort property are intertwined.

Mansfield Side. This is my favorite place to eat/drink. Go all the way up to the top of the Quad Chair on Mansfield Side. The views on a clear day are awesome and sitting outside when it is sunny is just great. Definitely just go here for lunch or a coffee. Make sure to get a window table. You stand on the deck with a beer or drink before last run on a sunny day...it won't disappoint.

XC Skiing/Snowshoing/WinterTrails

Local Secret for a winter walk or snowshoe. This neighborhood trail is only a five minute drive from the village and is somehow completely undiscovered by tourists. You can enjoy a good 60 minute loop in here, usually without seeing anyone. It is magically quiet. It is delightful for a snowshoe or walk in the winter wonderland.

Longest (Largest?) XC trail system out there. Much revered. For those who just can't get enough in Stowe such that that the drive to Craftsbury is worth it.

MY FAVORITE!! GREAT FOR SNOWSHOES, A HIKE, AND XC IF YOU ARE OK WITH TRAILS THAT SONT HAVE THE PERFECT TRACKS. (xc skiers in here and other recreatora) *****A Local Gem and Secret**** This woodland trail system will have some tourists, but not a lot. And the woods are lovely, dark, and deep -- you will largely be alone the whole time. Delightful solitude in the fresh Vermont air. You can tailor your walk in here to be anything from 20 to 90 minutes. I suggest taking a picture on the board of the little map as you enter. I get lost all the time. Here you will find little bridges over little rivers and mossy trees and mossy branches stretching out, canopied over trails... it is a magical forest. And depending on the amount of snow, you might catch a glimpse of the famous gnomes. This is my favorite place for a XC ski, snowshoe, or walk in a winter wonderland.

Similar to Wiesner Woods, it's not the best XC skiing without perfect tracks, but tracks usually form to the side of where people walk. It's right in town like a 2 min drive from either Airbnb, and it's a lovely way to be outside in the heart of Stowe walking, Snowshoeing, or XC skiing in MINUTES It's a quick and free way to get out there fast. The path starts right behind the church in the lower parking lot and goes for about six miles almost to the mountain. ***Extra Great Tip here: Veer right at the field .6miles after the start (the church start) and you're on the quiet path loop which is extra beautiful around corn fields and follows the river.

Local Secret: Excellent XC skiing and beautiful hiking and snowshoeing. At the end of Maple Run Lane is a long, beautiful (flat) hiking and XC trail which many locals XC on. Very wide. Very quiet. It's up from town by about a 12 min drive from the village in the Nebraska Valley, a valley formed the back side of Spruce Peak and the Stirling range, at the western edge of the border of Stowe where it meets neighboring Morrisville. You can find this hidden gem by looking for a small pull off to the right after a drive down Maple Run. To the left is a large sign/driveway that says "Greer". Straight ahead is parking for about three cars and a path entrance. Go ahead and park and walk straight in. You can bring dogs off leash here, just FYI.

Ice Skating

One of the reasons we feel like we are on vacation all the time when we live here is the skating rink up at the resort. This is a MUST DO!! I highly recommend the Ice Skating Rink at the Stowe Mountain Resort on the Spruce Peak side. After 4pm you can park in the lot right at Spruce there for $5/hr or park free at the Mansfield lot and take the Over Easy Gondola over to the Spruce Side or take the shuttle from town. You can rent skates at the shop next to the rink or bring your own. They decorate it with little lights and a Christmas tree. Music plays. It's a delightful vacation-y experience all around. A "Must Do." Rink usually opens at 12. Usually closes at 6 on weeknights, 9pm on weekend nights (definitely check in advance) You can park in the pay lots associated with the hotel. I recommend dinner at Whistle Pig (Raclette) while you're there (looks out right in the rink) or at least a drink from Whistle Pig around a firepit. If not, sushi or pizza from the Matterhorn 1/3 of the way down the mountain on the way home. (Both restaurants take reservations. )

Rent Sleds Hybrid XC/SNOWSHOES (called Altais)--they are amazing Sleds and Snowshoes here. Best of all, you can reserve them in advance which I highly recommend especially on busy vacation weeks and weekends. They are very fairly priced and you can do it all online. Airbnb does not allow me to post links but a quick search will lead you to the website. The store is on your way into town about 1 minute before you reach the turn onto Thomas Lane to get to The Hideaway, or 1 minute before you turn into the driveway of the Nest. Just a reminder to keep gear in the car. Have fun!!
