The Severn Bore, Gloucestershire Tidal bores, where surge waves rush backwards up a river from downstream, occur in only a handful of places around the world. The Severn River has one of the biggest, caused by the huge tidal range (the height difference between high tide and low tide) of the Severn Estuary, which is the second highest on the planet; at times reaching 50 feet. At high tide, water is funnelled back into the narrow channel of the river creating a wave that rushes back upstream. At its most powerful the wave can reach 9 feet high with speeds in excess of 13 mph. Perhaps coolest of all is the fact that you can surf it. The world record distance is 9.25 miles. See it: The best viewing locations are between Minsterworth and Lower Parting, in Gloucestershire. For information on tidal times, visit severn-bore.co.uk

Distance from here: 56min drive/21 miles. All Saints Church in Selsley, is at the very heart of the English Arts & Crafts Movement. The last of the great Cotswold wool churches, and the first to exhibit work of the craftsman movement. A delightful feature of the church is the series of three large windows which flood the space with light, one each by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. The rose window depicts scenes including a richly coloured Adam and Eve, considered to be one of the best small scale designs in stained glass by William Morris.
