A sanctuary for wildlife AND humans. Your blood pressure will lower the second you cross the little foot bridge. Wander the paths and you may end up in the New Paltz community garden.

A must for any hiker. Loads of beautiful trails with impressive vistas of the Wallkill Valley (it used to be considered the bread basket for New York City) and of the Shawangunk Mountains, a mecca for rock climbers from around the world.

You walk along the edge of pastures so that you have a constant view of the Gunks—no trees to obscure anything. It helps to put our lives in perspective--people become little specks in the distance. You can almost imagine yourself in England on the moors.

The drama of the 3 lakes within the Minnewaska State Park will take your breath away! You can even swim here! The trails around the lakes are spectacular, too.

You can bike or walk all the way to Kingston on this trail or south towards Wallkill. About 5 1/2 miles north from New Paltz, towards Kingston, the trail passes right by the Rail Trail Cafe, which is open mid-May to mid-Oct. The best part? The trail, at least around New Paltz, has just been resurfaced and it is now a dream to bike and walk on.

Food scene

Main Course is probably the closest place to eat. You can take out or eat there. The take out food is appealingly displayed, especially the desserts. We like the make-your-own salad with a myriad of options.

Ciao Bella just opened in the former train station, right next to the Wallkill Rail Trail. Northern Italian, but not strictly so. You’ll recognize lots of popular Americanized favorites on the menu.

The Parish, as they claim on their website, does indeed have the best view in town! You look out over farmland to the Gunks and the Mohonk tower. The food is mostly New Orleans style—you can get fried alligator bites here & addictive fried okra—but there are plenty of non-Creole/Cajun choices here, too.

This glitzy place is brand new and replaced an old Irish bar. Again, we haven’t been yet, but we hear from neighbors that it’s great.

P & G’s probably ranks as the most popular restaurant/bar in New Paltz. And rightly so. You can count on it for good, solid versions of American classics. Located at a prime corner in New Paltz, a window seat makes for ideal people watching.
