Welcome to St George Utah

Sightseeing

Sand Hollow already one of the most visited destinations in the Utah State Park system, with recreation opportunities for nearly every user from boaters to bikers, and OHV riders to equestrians. A favorite destination for local off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, Sand Mountain provides 15,000 acres of perfectly sculpted dunes. The red sand is an incredible backdrop for Sand Hollow reservoir. At nearly twice the size of nearby Quail Creek Reservoir, Sand Hollow offers boating and other water recreation in a spectacular setting. Sand Hollow is located approximately 15 miles east of St George and seven miles east of the I-15 Hurricane Exit. Visitors should exit I-15 at Exit 16 (Highway 9), travel east for about four miles and turn right on Sand Hollow Road, travel south for about three miles and turn left at the park entrance.

This 52-acre rustic community park is a rock climber's paradise. From Dixie Rock, also known as the Sugarloaf, spectacular views of downtown, White Dome, Zion National Park and Arizona can be seen. This park has a large trellis pavilion with two barbecues and fire ring, several smaller picnic areas with tables, two with metal trellis pavilions, and a separate fire pit with an amphitheater. Numerous hiking trails provide access to a Boy Scout Cave, historical pioneer cabin location, slot canyons and a connection into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. https://www.sgcity.org/pioneerpark/

A short walk through a manmade tunnel is the highlight of this unique, family-friendly trail located just 20 miles east of Zion National Park. The cave-like tunnel/Belly of the Dragon was originally created as a water culvert under HWY89 but over time drainage from upper canyon water flow has carved the sandstone walls and created a beautiful rippling tunnel prime for exploring. This is such a great adventure with kids so bring the whole family and have some fun!

Venture onto a shifting sea of red sand. Changed by winds, these mountains and hills of sand can move as much as 50 feet per year. With areas for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts and those with non-motorized pursuits, the dunes offer adventures for all.

Grafton Ghost Town In 1866 due to Indian influence the 28 or so families that were living in Grafton completely abandoned it for two years. Three families remained into the 1920’s. In more recent times scenes from many movies where shot there, the most famous is probably 1968 movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance. Kid. For a very short time Grafton, instead of Kanab, was the county seat of Kane County. Today Grafton lies in Washington County. http://www.zionnational-park.com/smithsonian-butte.htm

Free Tour of this historical home. President Young spent each winter in St. George from 1870 until his death in August 1877. The location was ideal for him. The warm weather was good for his health, and it allowed him to interact with the Saints in southern Utah. In 1872, he purchased the home that is now known as the Brigham Young Winter Home. From this place, he oversaw the construction of the temple and prepared for the sacred work that would be done there.

For the Kiddos

This park is amazing! My kids love spending time here. The Thunder Junction All Abilities park features a dinosaur theme that includes complete wheelchair accessible playground equipment, climbing wall, an “erupting” volcano, splash pad, and a “roaring” C.P. Huntington 1/4-scale train on a 2,700-foot track. The ground is covered with durable soft-surfacing making accessibility easier for those in wheelchairs. The all-abilities park is located inside Tonaquint Park at 1851 S. Dixie Drive https://www.sgcity.org/cityparks/thunderjunction

City/town information

St. George is central to some of the most dramatic natural beauty in the American West, from the Mojave Desert to Zion National Park and the Pine Valley Mountains. While its summers are hot, St. George's mild and largely snow-free winters make it popular with golfers, hikers and bikers. In fact, Brigham Young wintered here – his home in town is open to the public.
