294 S. 4th St. Highlands Come! Sit! Stay! The Ugly Dog is one of our favorite places for lunch or diner in Highlands. This place is popular with both locals and tourists alike. In fact, so popular they also have a second location in Cashiers. It is a relaxed pub atmosphere, with a delicious menu serving a wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and hot dogs. Not to mention the large selection of specialty drinks, draft & can beer and wine. Be sure to grab one of their hilarious t-shirts before you leave. https://www.theuglydogpub.com/

521 E. Main St, Highlands Mountain Grocery is not just a grocery store. They have made to order hot breakfast, a grill serving burgers, salads, sandwiches & pizza, ice cream, a bakery, a wine bar and beer taps. You can get any of it to go! You can also pick up a nice take and heat dinner to go. Be aware, though, that it is not a quiet meal if you plan to eat there. It gets rather busy and loud during the more popular times of the year. A lot you might have to wait for seating too and their is no hostess taking names. People often hover over your shoulder when you are close to finishing, hoping to grab your table when you leave. https://www.mfgro.com/

Franklin Food & Drink

188 W. Main St., Franklin, NC Lazy Hiker is located in a building that used to be Franklin's fire house. They have a good selection of beers to meet a variety of tastes, which makes this our go to brewery. They also have live music scheduled on most weekends. During the summer they use an outside stage behind they brewery. This place is popular with hikers because it is close to the Appalachian Trail. It is pet friendly, with bowls of water on the outside patio. They also have a food truck with a decent small selection of sandwiches and salads. We have found the food is hit or miss at times though. We would suggest go for lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants, then head to the Hiker. Parking is limited in the lot at the Brewery, but the church across the street allows the use of their lot and there is a crosswalk to assist in your "hike" across. https://lazyhikerbrewing.com/

100 Lakeside Dr. Currahee Brewing is a brewery serving European style beers. They are heavy on the IPAs and darker, heavy high gravity brews. It is located beside the Little Tennessee River, so while has an inside tasting room, the outside patio and terrace is absolutely the best place to be during the warmer months. You can grab a beer and find a seat right next to the water. They also have an outdoor stage with live music in the evenings. https://curraheebrew.com/

459 East Main St The first thing that needs to be said is do not be put off by the location of this place. Yes, it does adjoin a gas station. Second, they only accept cash. No credit cards allowed. Now, that being said, this place has very nice food! They position themselves as French cuisine, yet there is some Italian pastas mixed in there too. There is no website, but you can see the menu on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CaffeRel/menu. The menu is quite extensive and very good for lunch or dinner. Also, be aware they only serve wine. We had a laugh though when the waitress informed us that if we wanted beer we could go through the door adjoining the gas station to purchase beer to bring back into the restaurant.

This is a great pub with nice food that is better than your average bar fare. This location is more of a bar atmosphere than the Highlands Dog.

Cullasaja River Gorge - The Waterfall Byway

This is a spectacular drive along a scenic highway known for it's waterfalls. Follow the stops below for a fun day seeking waterfalls! Three can be seen directly from the road, while the most stunning stop, Dry Falls, requires a short hike. But it is worth it. To access the Gorge from the cabin, go back to the subdivision entrance at the main road. Turn sharply left onto Buck Creek Road, headed toward Franklin. In two (2) miles you come to US Hwy 64. Turn sharply left onto Hwy 64 headed toward Highlands. This will begin the Cullasaja River Gorge drive. And what a beautiful ride!
Stop #2 - This next stop is 2.4 miles from Cullasaja Falls (Stop 1). There are pull-off areas on both sides of the road. This is a directly accessible roadside waterfall with a small swimming hole that will likely be filled with swimmers on warm days. It is also known as Bust-Your-Butt-Falls because of the people attempting to slide down the falls and often bust their butt.

Stop #3 - Dry Falls is on the left 1.9 miles from Quarry Falls (Stop 2). The location is nicely marked with signage and a maintained parking lot. This waterfall is our favorite along this route. It is a easy & short 0.20 mile walk from the parking area. You must be able to descend a short flight of stairs and then walk a paved moderate slope down to the falls. The path circles behind and underneath the falls and then to the other side of the gorge. You have an almost 360 degree of this breathtaking 75 ft waterfall.

Stop #4 - Bridal Veil Falls is difficult to miss as you drive 8/10 of a mile further on Hwy 64. It is a 40 ft. waterfall, located right next to the road after leaving Dry Falls (Stop 3). The road used to go directly behind the falls, but has since been re-routed and the road access blocked. You can still walk and stand behind the falls and take a few pictures. This is a popular spot because even those not driving the route seeking the waterfalls are tempted to stop because of the easy access.
