Right around the corner, this James Beard award winning Trinidadian restaurant is known for their doubles (curried chickpea sandwiches on fried flatbread), bake and roti. Our regular order items are bake and corned beef and doubles. If you like a little spice, ask for either one with "slight pepper"

Greenberg's makes really delicious egg sandwiches. I love their bacon, egg & cheese on an everything bagel. Please note, during Covid they require all orders to be placed on-line ahead of time. They deliver or you can pick up from their storefront window. Its about a 15 minute walk.

Chez Oskar is a long time favorite French Restaurant and is great for brunch, lunch and dinner. They were located in Fort Greene for over 20 years and we were so excited when they moved to Bed Stuy. We highly recommend both the food and cocktails! They have ample outdoor seating and take reservations.

We love wondering through the Botanic Gardens and if you are visiting Brooklyn in the spring, we highly recommend a visit. The Cherry Tree walk is spectacular during its peak bloom in April. And if you are here in May, the Peonies and lilacs are incredible. During Covid, advance tickets are required at bbg.org

Walking the loop around Prospect Park is like walking around the world. On the weekends the park is teaming with music and festivities from so many different cultures. It has been referred to as "Brooklyn's Backyard" If you start at Grand Army Plaza and are here on a Saturday there is a great farmers market. The entire loop is just under 3.5 miles with a hill at the end. But you can easily cut through the park at different points and there is an inner loop around the long meadow that is a lovely walk. There are restrooms at the bandshell, picnic house and Lefrak Center. During the summer Lefrak is an outdoor roller rink and in winter, an ice skating rink. If you want to get a feel for how Brooklynites spend their free time, visiting Prospect Park is a must!

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a waterfront park with spectacular city views. Take the A train 3 stops to High Street and walk down the hill to the neighborhood of DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). You'll walk past one of the best places for a NYC Pizza, Julianna's (if Julianna's is packed, it's rival Grimaldi's is also very good). Once in the park, stroll along the waterfront. The piers have been transformed into parks for all sorts of sports and there are lots of playgrounds for kids. Jane's Carousel is a beautifully restored carousel right on the water (during Covid, tickets must be purchased on-line). We highly recommend exploring the park and the surrounding neighborhoods of Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights! Be sure to check out their website for all the fun things to do https://www.brooklynbridgepark.org/

One of my favorite things to do on a beautiful day is to take the NYC Ferry. The cost is $2.75/ticket and transfers are free for 90 minutes. The easiest location to start from is Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 (the Pier 1 stop is under construction spring 2021). Take the ferry 1 stop to Wall Street/Pier 11 and then transfer to a number of ferry options. The East River line will take you under the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges with wonderful views of New York City, Brooklyn and Queens. During the summer you can also take the ferry to Governor's Island, which is a favorite destination for locals. You can also take the ferry south to the historic neighborhood of Red Hook and get a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Buying tickets via the NYC Ferry App is quick and easy. NOTE: If you have young children, arrive to the ferry early and explore the fantastic playgrounds around Pier 6 "Swing Valley" "Slide Mountain" and in the summer "Splash Pad"

Fort Greene Park is another must visit if you want to get a feel for Brooklyn. We were lucky enough to live across the street from it about 15 years ago. On Saturdays there's a Greenmarket on Washington Park and Dekalb. The surrounding neighborhood of Fort Greene is filled with tree lined streets and historic homes. There are tons of great restaurants on Dekalb - we love Walter's! Coffee at Bittersweet is also delicious. If you love bookstores, Greenlight on Fulton is a local favorite.

Located along the west side of Manhattan is the High Line. I think this is one of the coolest parks in New York City. Built on historic elevated railroad tracks, the meandering park is filled with native plants and trees. The architecture that has been built up along the High Line is some of the most impressive in the city. There are several entry points, but if you want to start at the beginning, the entry is in the West Village on Gansevoort Street right next to The Whitney Museum (take the A to 14th Street then walk). During Covid entry requires a free, timed reservation. Check out their website to reserve a time and discover all the cool things to do https://www.thehighline.org/

Walking routes

If you enjoy walking, we recommend walking down Eastern Parkway to get to the Botanical Gardens, Brooklyn Museum or Prospect Park. The best way to reach it is around the corner on Fulton, walk up New York Ave to Eastern Parkway and turn right. Its 1.5 miles to the Brooklyn Museum, which is about a 30 minute walk. The Parkway has 2 dedicated pedestrian esplanades and this is the route we use when going to Prospect Park (it takes about 25 minutes to get to Grand Army Plaza on bikes).
