Walks

For fabulous walks just minutes from the house, visit Pen Pych Woodland Park. The carpark at the bottom of the walk is just a 10 minute walk or a 4 minute drive. Pen Pych Woodland Park • From the house walk to the end of the terrace and turn left towards Wyndham Street. • Just past the turning to the lane, turn left and go through the chicane barrier onto a tarmac footpath. (This used to be an old railway line and just past the bridge is where Blaenrhondda Station was located.) • Exit the footpath at the other end and cross the road, continuing in the same direction, with the back of the houses on St Alban's Road now on your right. • After the barrier (usually open), look for a narrow footpath on the left and follow this for about 20 meters. • Exit the footpath and cross the road to another footpath immediately opposite, which rises quite steeply up for about 10 meters. • Follow this path – may be muddy in places – for about 200 meters. Look for narrow tracks on the right-hand side which lead steeply up to the carpark, or continue to the end and take a gentler walk around to the carpark. • From the carpark just follow the footpath uphill. • Stop at the picnic bench for a short rest and to take in the view, then continue on uphill to the waterfall viewpoint (this is a 10-15 minute walk from the carpark). • If you want to continue up to the waterfall or to the summit, then look for the narrow path to the right of the viewpoint. WARNING: Sturdy foot ware and supervision of young children are recommended for this part of the walk as it is a bit of a climb and the ground can be loose underfoot and slippery when wet. • To reach the summit, from the waterfall go back to the path and look for the path leading up the right-hand hill. • When you reach the woodland at the top, continue around to the right and follow the path around the edge of the mountain top until you reach the flag. From here you can look down the valley, and you can see our house! If you want to explore more, then on your way back down look for a path on the right after you go past the picnic table and follow this for more woodland and river walks. To head back to the house from these just keep going down hill/stream until you reach familiar ground. If you are not familiar with the area, please note: • The safest and quickest way back is the way you came. Some of the paths can be quite treacherous and are best suited to sheep. • Please don’t attempt the walk to the summit during bad or changeable weather. The clouds can quickly come down over the mountains and it is easy to become disorientated and lose your way.

A lovely long walk through forest and along hillside, with lovely scenery and a nice pool at the end to soak those tired feet. Allow 2-3 hours for the round trip. • From the house walk to the end of the terrace and turn left towards Wyndham Street. • Just past the turning to the lane, turn left and go through the chicane barrier onto a tarmac footpath. (This used to be an old railway line and just past the bridge is where Blaenrhondda Station was located.) • Exit the footpath at the other end and cross the road, continuing in the same direction, with the back of the houses on St Alban's Road on your right. • Go through the barrier (usually open, but continue through anyway if it's closed) and follow the road past the fish farm, and then follow the path under the road bridge and past the skate ramp. • Turn left in front of the school and go over the footbridge. • Turn right onto Blaenrhondda Road, then cross the road and take the first left onto Clyngwyn Road. • At the top of Clyngwyn Road follow the road around to the right and continue along Bryn Henllan until you go past a row of garages on your left. • Cross the road after the garages and look for the gap in the fence just to the side of the garages, which leads onto a foot path. • Turn right onto the footpath. The footpath can be muddy at the start but improves and will widen out as you go on. • Follow the footpath for about 1 mile until you come to a fork in the path, with a stone marker in the middle. • Take the left fork and follow for about ½ mile. Look for a narrow footpath on your left hand side and a large fallen tree just off the footpath on your right. • Take the left hand footpath and follow it gently uphill until you come to a small dam. • A short way beyond the dam is a waterfall which can also be reached, although I have not been up to it so cannot advise on the difficulty. On your way back, for a bit of variety: • when you get to the fork in the path follow it around to the left and continue on this path until it eventually leads out onto a road. • Turn right onto the road and follow it down into the top end of Blaenrhondda. Look our for the heritage information boards positioned along the road. • Continue down Blaenrhondda Road until you reach Blaenrhondda Bridge (road bridge). • Turn left onto the bridge and at the end follow the road right down St Alban’s terrace. • At the bottom of the road, cross the road in front of the church and take the footpath back to Eileen Place.

In the middle of the Brecon Beacons Pen Y Fan is the highest peak in South Wales. There are wonderful views across the valley of the river Usk to the North, and connecting walks from the summit to the other "Beacons". Allow approximately 1 hour to the summit, walking briskly on the flatter bits. This route can get very busy in good weather. There are more challenging and worthwhile scrambles up the mountain from the North, which few people use, though the view is much more dramatic. Parking will cost £6.50 a day (as at February 2024), and the post code for the car park is LD3 8NL.

Launched in 2012, the Wales Coastal Path is 870 miles long and was heralded as the first dedicated footpath in the world to cover the entire length of a country's coastline. If you are looking for a walk that is easy on the feet and not too strenuous, try parking at Bracelet Bay, Mumbles, and walking westward to Caswell Bay. It's a 6 mile round walk, but the footpath is concrete most of the way and reasonably easy where not concreted. There are a few short but steep hills but it's a lovely rather than challenging walk. There are cafés at Caswell and Langland Bays and plenty of benches to rest along the way. Visit https://www.visitpembrokeshire.com/explore-pembrokeshire/coast-path for more information.

Located in the lovely Brecon Beacons National Park area of South Wales. The sanctuary rescues and provides a home for many types of unwanted animals, especially primates, such as chimpanzees, baboons, mandrills, spider monkeys, vervets, capuchins, mangabeys and marmosets. Although the sanctuary specialise in the care and protection of primates, it cannot stand by and see other animals in need of help. You will therefore find wolf dogs, horses, donkeys, cattle, pigs and others at the sanctuary. All are equally important members of the extended family. https://www.ape-monkey-rescue.org.uk/index.html

Castell Coch is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais, The 'Red Castle', rises up from the ancient beech woods of Fforest Fawr like a vision from a fairytale. Just a 30 minute drive from the house, this castle is well worth a visit, particularly if the weather is a bit dull as it's almost all indoors. There is also a little café here, but if you fancy something a bit more substantial to round off your tour of the castle then head off to Pugh's Garden Village (a 5 minute drive from the castle) for a tasty lunch afterwards.

Our Adventure Play Area boasts Hill Slides, Giant Swings, Tipis, Climbing Frames, Play Houses and Zip Wires to keep your 2 to 12 year olds out of mischief! Includes Wale's only licensed Gruffallo trail. Big Pit is a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums. With facilities to educate and entertain all ages, Big Pit is an exciting and informative day out. Enjoy a multi-media tour of a modern coal mine with a virtual miner in the Mining Galleries, exhibitions in the Pithead Baths and Historic colliery buildings. All this AND the world-famous Underground Tour. Go 300 feet underground with a real miner and see what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. Entry to the museum is free, but there is a small fee for the Underground Tour, and advance booking is essential.

Great little café serving restaurant quality food. Serving food all day, and they have themed evenings. There are a limited number of tables so it is essential that you book for the evening. We have eaten here during one of their themed nights. Park in the carpark behind the library - just a 3 minute walk away, or catch a bus to The Stag and get off almost outside the café.

A family run pub/hotel within walking distance (less than 1 mile) from the house. The Dun (as it is fondly known locally) has been renovated in recent years and boasts a lovely garden with great views of the surrounding hills. We have eaten here (2022) and can confirm that the food is very nice and reasonably priced. However, you will need to book 24 hours in advance if you wish to eat here.

We haven't yet had the pleasure of eating here, but I've heard good things about it. The chef has an interesting story and has worked at The Ritz and cooked for royalty. Check out the FB page for some nice foody pics. Located at the far end of Treherbert (look out for the Flame sign) so less than 2 miles from the house.

Highly recommended by my sister (I've not yet tried this restaurant). Casa Bianca is a small friendly restaurant serving delicious Italian food. It is very popular so booking is essential. Pontypridd is approximately 25 minutes away by car or 30 minutes by train.

Probably the most iconic seaside town in Wales, rivalling places like Cornwall’s Mevagissey and Polperro for quaintness and charm. It was awarded a Silver award for the best UK coastal resort at the British Travel awards in 2016. Fabulous beaches and lovely town. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo, but check it out on-line.
