Best Bars in Rome

Best Cool Place where Relax Drinking good Italian Beers & Cocktails
Freni e Frizioni is a short walk from San Calisto and a long way away in terms of style. Here, the space is modern and the specialty is the craft cocktail, which Freni does as well as anyone in Rome. The ever-evolving drinks are often named after some theme (films, cartoons, etc), and go way beyond your average Negroni. Think a “Mediterranean Fizz” with gin, lemon and rosemary, or a “Popeye” concoction of rum, tomato vinegar and spinach sugar. The elaborate drinks require a fair amount of shaking and straining and juicing by the talented bartenders, but part of the fun is waiting at the bar, ticket in hand, and watching them work. There’s also free vegan aperitivo every night. A good place for a pre-or-post dinner cocktail (it’s open, and lively, until 2:00 a.m.)

The name of this pint-sized (pun intended) pub literally means “But what’d you come here to do?” The answer, most certainly, is “drink beer.” Since 2001, Ma Che has been a touchstone of the ever-growing craft beer scene in Rome. Every day, 16 different brews are on tap, some of them obscure Italian varieties, but also European and American beers that one rarely finds in a standard bar or grocery store. Seating is limited, and the beers are, understandably, on the more expensive side, so best to make this one stop on a bar crawl. Get a Belgian tripel or an Italian IPA, served in a plastic cup, and enjoy outside with the young, chain-smoking crowd.

Bar del Cinque is located right near the main stretch of American-student bars, but a bland shot-bucket locale this is not. Dimly-lit, with a long, narrow bar, it seems the kind of place where 1920’s-era expats might gather for a nightly drink. Like all Roman bars, it’s open early, and the booths in the back are mighty comfortable to stay in for a few hours with a cappuccino and a newspaper. Unlike most Roman bars, at night it becomes “El Mojitaro,” with a separate cocktail station that slings cheap and dangerously drinkable mojitos. A weird and wonderful combination that makes Bar del Cinque a destination for both daytime locals and nighttime visitors.

Bar San Calisto (Piazza di San Calisto, 3) is one of Trastevere’s oldest, best-known, and certainly most beloved bars. Open for more than half a century, it’s the favored haunt of artists, locals, tourists, garbagemen, drunks, street musicians, refugees, and certain Devour Rome writers. It’s your classic Roman bar. Open at 6:00 a.m. for coffee and pastries, its iconic outdoor seats fill up with beer-sipping readers throughout the day until the evening, when the party envelops the whole piazza, to wrap up at 2:00 a.m. the following morning. Nothing at San Calisto is of artisanal quality, but the spritzes are mixed strong, the prices proudly cheap (€00.80 for an espresso, €1.50 for a beer), and the atmosphere singular. As Trastevere becomes more and more chic (and expensive), San Calisto has remained without pretensions, good for any type of night, and any type of person.

T-bar is all about the space. With a generous open terrace and plenty of outdoor seating, this crew pride themselves on their fun cocktails, abundant buffet (served at the table by one of their staff members), and their chic, laid-back vibe. The music here is eclectic, too – expect everything from house, to 80s, to rock.

Tucked away in Trastevere’s cozier side streets, Santo is a charming aperitivo spot. Decorated with sophistication, lots of greenery, and attention to detail, Santo is a true gem. Both a restaurant and a cocktail bar, each plate and drink are prepared with great care. The bar is captained by Matteo Masci, and the kitchen led by Gianluca Vestroni. Together they make quite the (delicious) team; reason to why making a reservation is highly recommended! In case you’re unsure about what cocktail to order for your happy hour, know that you can ask for an original creation as well; trust the mixologeres! They’ve recently added many organic wines to their wine selection, too!

Il Sorpasso comes from the verb “to overtake” and when it comes to quality and style, this place definitely surpasses the competition. In the late afternoon and early evening it has the relaxed vibe of a spacious farmhouse kitchen but after 7pm this place is buzzing with locals. It’s an inviting jumble of quaint wooden tables and painted chairs with a delectable menu full of tasty cocktails, yummy wine, and their specialty artisanal meat and cheese platters directly coming from their charcuterie station.

Just down the street from St. Peter’s, the stylish La Zanzara is perfect for an early evening soiree. The aperitivo is second to their liquid concoctions, as they pride themselves on their bar skills (try their Bloody Mary!) But the chef keeps the kitchen fresh by exploring American, Asian and the best of Italian ingredients which are translated into a rich spread for any empty stomach. Great outdoor seating.

Tree Bar is one of the few restaurants in Rome completely surrounded by a leafy green vista. This relaxed setting is perfect for a long afternoon lunch, an intimate dinner or late night tapas. Tree Bar prides itself on making fresh bread, wood-oven pizza, and even artisanal beer through its very own agricultural agency: Treefarm. This is the perfect setting for an outdoor aperitivo. During happy hour, you’re sitting in one of the tables, you’ll be served a platter with focaccia, pizza and fried antipasti (according to the day) along with your drink, while if you’re staying in the garden you’ll be given a small food bag to pair with your drink.

This place takes its beer so seriously and has such a vast choice of labels that you can even do a little beer tasting as you would normally with a glass of vino in order to make the perfect choice. They also offer up classic companions to a pint of beer, from hamburgers to hot dogs, but with quality beef and homemade ketchup.

This locale in the Flaminio neighbourhood has become one of the hottest places in town for drinks. Footsteps from MAXXI and the Ponte della Musica, it’s the perfect place to indulge in mixology cocktails, wines, and Italian and international delicacies like nachos with guacamole and cured meat and cheese boards in a trendy setting. Metropolita’s reopening comes with three new concepts: the “Chiosco”, which is their window that will be transformed into a bar directly on the piazza where you’ll be able to order your take away; a new summer drink list and food menu with gourmet burgers; and their delivery that will be active from June 5th, directly on their app or on their official website. La Punta is so much more than Rome’s first Mexican bar – it is quite literally another world. Upon entering this small, colorful space transformed by partners Cristian Bugiada and Roberto Artusio, you will feel like you’ve been transported straight to Mexico. Their mission is quite simply to import Mexico to Italy. They’re even the ones responsible for creating the first-ever Paloma Day on May 22nd in collaboration with the Vesper Bar in Amsterdam. What started as a passion project created from their deep-rooted love and respect for Mexico (specifically the region of Oaxaca), La Punta has become a beautiful tribute to all things Mexican. From the extensive list of tequila and mezcal to their flavorful menu – La Punta celebrates the food, spirit and culture of Mexico in the most unique and authentic way. So what to drink at La Punta? Obviously, a Paloma – the classic Mexican cocktail made with tequila and lime juice (originally created in 1955). Only their reincarnation incorporates fresh grapefruit juice and agave syrup.

Simone Mina, sixth generation of a famous restaurant family here in Rome, is the mastermind behind this tiny establishment. He’s also the only person operating it. His concept was to create an imaginary museum of liquids in this hidden space located on the second floor of Checchino dal 1887, a restaurant that has been around for 130+ years. Like Simone, this bar is truly genuine and one-of-a-kind. Taking inspiration from his family and the surrounding neighborhood of Testaccio, Ch1887 combines food and cocktail culture, by experimenting with flavors and ingredients that can be found in traditional Roman dishes. The drinks pay homage to his roots and change frequently but the result is always the same – incredibly delicious and unique. His latest invention – the “Trikini” – a creative twist on the classic Daiquiri, is made with Botran Reserve Blanca, lime, and Simone’s special trikini mix.

An Irish-Italian who has traveled around the globe, Patrick Pistolesi, knows double cultures well. Formally of Barnum and Café Propaganda, Drink Kong is Pistolesi’s first solo project that takes the bar scene in Rome to the next level. A street-posh, fusion bar that can be seen aesthetically from the vibrant neon interiors decorated with custom-made, old-fashioned plush couches to the more modern and colorful chairs in the second room in the back. There’s even a secret, private room for select tastings and some retro arcade video games, paying homage to his childhood in the 80’s. The fusion concept continues onto the menu with eclectic and international food offerings that can only be found if you were traveling the world or most NYC streets. Pistolesi is perhaps one of the coolest guys in the business with a larger than life personality and somewhat tough exterior but on the inside, there is a deep, intuitive soul (much like Kong himself). After many years and success in the business, he has not lost sight of the most important part of the equation – the people coming to the establishment and their relationship with the bar and bartender. This vision is what inspired Drink Kong and is best represented with their unique cocktail concept. The drink menu is designed with you in mind – literally. You’re encouraged to (in relaxed way) pick what color resonates with you and after choosing, you can read the drink recipe as well as the overall “mood” description, reflecting which one you are experiencing at that given moment. Because the strongest way to evoke emotions is through the senses. As for the cocktail – you’ll have to pick for yourself.

Modeled after the speakeasies from the Prohibition, The Barber Shop is somehow different from all the rest. The only signage outside of this secret bar near the Colosseum is a vintage barber shop pole outside their unmarked door. Both founders and owners Joy Napolitano and Matteo Siena are still behind the bar and joined by head bartender Federico Diddi, Michelangelo Bruno, and Karin Germani. Some of the nicest, down-to-earth people in the industry all taking turns popping out from behind the bar to engage with the customer, as this is the only way to get to know and interact with their clientele. A simple idea but pretty rare these days. Not only making the overall experience more intimate and personal – it somehow makes the cocktail taste that much better. Despite other speakeasies around the world and some of the first ones that sprouted up in NYC, The Barber Shop combines the exclusive factor synonymous with the term speakeasy with a genuinely friendly touch, hands-on approach and service. Back to basics. Maybe that’s their other secret. For three consecutive years, they have been one of the 100 Best Bars in Italy, among the Top 10 Cocktail Bars of 2017, The Best Bar Teams in 2018 and as of 2019, The Barber Shop has been listed as one of the Best 500 Bars in the World. Perhaps for all of those reasons listed previously. Their current drink menu is comprised of two parts: Renaissance Cocktails and the Whiskey book (which was divided between Europe, Asia and the US). However these days, they are currently working on a new menu so stay tuned. Must drink is the award-winning Il Poeta created by Joy Napolitano, the man himself.

Located right near Piazza del Popolo, Il Marchese is the first Amaro bar in Italy – and Europe. Opened early in 2019, the space is beautiful and elegant with cocktails to match. While Il Marchese was born as a single-spirit focused bar with over 600 different Amaro labels to choose from and an extensive list of drinks featuring that ingredient as the main protagonist, it is also one of Rome’s be cocktail bars. With Desire Verdecchia behind these unique cocktail creations, formerly of Salotto 42 and Caffè Propaganda, you’ll find an amazing selection of classic and experimental cocktails. And for the amaro aficionados, there is also a list of 30 amaros that change monthly. So plenty of reasons to expand your palate – Amaro connoisseur or not. The staff, managed by partners/owners Davide Solari and Lorenzo Renzi, is professional, polite and extremely well-versed in Amaro. Their signature cocktail prepared by top barman Dario D’Agostini is the Olimpia – a delicate balance of sweet and bitter with: Amaro Juith, Lychee, Rosemary, Lemon juice and Champagne.

A throwback to a secret society (carboneria) from the late 1800’s, The Race Club is a members-only lounge housed in a space with many past lives. In the 1950’s the building where it now stands was completely abandoned only to be restructured a century later. During this time and into the 70’s, a recording studio where many Roman singers and songwriters emerged. After that, it became a gathering place for a broader clientele mainly for gambling. Nowadays, the space has been redesigned like an upscale basement hangout, adorned with quirky and thoughtful touches. Virtually hidden from the street level and despite the bouncer that you will find at the door most nights (as well as the mandatory Membership Card) The Race Club is dark, cozy and extremely inviting bar with many little corners and couches – conducive for lounging around with a great cocktail. There are 6 soci in total – 3 of whom I’ve had the pleasure to meet personally several times (Matteo, Mattia and Alfonsina) all who have taken great care to make this place what it is now five years later. Must drink is Matteo’s latest concoction – V for Vespetta – a surprising cocktail in both flavor and how it is served. Laphroaig Scotch, lemon, and their secret raspberry mixture.

The Gin Corner, located in the Hotel Adriano is the first bar in Italy dedicated entirely to Gin. It’s not only a great little hotel bar and gin lovers hot spot, it has been proclaimed the “Martini Mecca” by the Martini & Friends Association who meets there regularly. The tiny space is refreshing and light, like a perfect gin & tonic should be. And with more than 100 gins on the list and veteran bartender Angelo de Valeri (with over 40 years of experience in bartending) at the helm, you are guaranteed the best in service and gin-based cocktail, whichever one you choose. One of his signature drinks – the Gold Martini is made with Italian olive oil – a simple yet flavorful cocktail that’s also extremely photogenic.

Club Derriere (which appropriately translates to back room) is a hidden bar located in the heart of Rome. Hidden because the main entrance is in a small alleyway off of the bustling Piazza delle Coppelle – the other secret entrance is through one of the back, private dining rooms of the massive restaurant Osteria delle Coppelle. Even the bathroom is somewhat hidden – behind a fake bookcase. Inside you will find a dark, intimate space much like a living room which makes Club Derriere the perfect spot for a nightcap and a popular after-hours spot for industry peeps. Their other clientele ranges from local professionals to diplomats, although there is the occasional in-the-know tourist. Club Derriere’s menu is inspired by author Kurt Vonnegut and (like one of his stories) with each page and cocktail, another element is added to it. Simple ingredients, complex favors and easy to drink, all cocktails are made with love by a top-notch and super lovely bar staff. Their signature drink is the Newton – a twist on the classic Gin & Tonic, with Hendrick’s Gin, clarified apple juice and lemongrass.

The very first Tiki Bar in Rome, Makai Surf & Tiki Bar is as original and unique as it can get – especially in Italy. Equal parts exotic and playful, the molto simpatico owners Camillo Affinita and Alessio Esposito took inspiration from the South Pacific, Hawaii, U.S. West Coast and Mexican cultures to create a fun, colorful and beautiful little oasis in the heart of Ostiense. The upstairs bar is open and airy, while their dimly lit underground lounge feels a bit more intimate and sexy – like an underground Tiki Beach Party. It’s perfect for late-night drinks or for private parties or events. And now with its recent renovations and full kitchen – you can visit Makai for lunch, aperitivo and dinner. The cocktails are Polynesian-inspired (as well as their food) but their most characteristic cocktail is the Donn’s Special Reserve Daiquiri (by Don Beach) made by the young yet extremely talented Lorenzo Verrucci.

The name, R.U.D.E, is an abbreviation of multiple words and definitions that in short means: Small Talk (poche chiacchiere). It’s really the perfect name for this ideal neighborhood bar in the cool and now up-and-coming Centocelle. But Rude’s approach is also a bit avant-garde. Owners Marco Zampilli and Cristian Ricci and their bar staff push the limits and much like with its name, the play on words (and your senses) are in constant motion here. Their Pop-Art inspired drink menu by Michele Ferruccio is minimal but impactful (think less is more). They don’t disclose the exact ingredients or their Rude aromas- preferring to keep everything a mystery. All eight drinks are pre-batched the day of, in order to accommodate their large volume of customers. Also unique is that each drink has a music pairing and a coaster (with a QR code) will be given to you with that specific song for your drink, that you can download and listen to later on Spotify. This bar stimulates all of your senses simultaneously – from visuals, to sound and taste. But the most important combination of all – Rude Centocelle manages to obtain a cool factor while keeping the warmth that can only be found at your neighborhood bar. Order the Porno Mariachi – but we can’t (and won’t) tell you why.

I have suddenly acquired a taste for cocktails. I used to shun mixed drinks in favor of wine and beer because the descriptions on the ubiquitous cocktail list brought to mind brightly colored sugary, hangover-inducing abominations. But Rome’s cocktail scene has grown up, and that is obvious at the cozy local haunts like Niji.

Right on piazza Campo de’ Fiori you’ll find one of Rome’s most beloved student meeting points for a fun night out. It’s called Drunken Ship, and it’s a student bar where you can get pretty much anything you want. It’s lively and packed with an international crowd, especially full of Americans. One of the biggest crowd pleasers is Drunken Ship’s beer pong table. Head to the bar, buy a beer pitcher, and get yourself in line to play a game of beer pong. Don’t forget your student ID, they offer student discounts! Just a heads up, there’s only one bathroom.

Removed from the crowded streets of central Rome, in front of the iconic Palladium Theater, lies one of Garbatella’s more refined dining and drinking experiences. Mentioned in several Roman food guides, and well loved by Romans and foreigners, Ristoro degli Angeli, with its inventive decor, is in possession of a sophisticated wine list. Perhaps more famed for its food, the general atmosphere of the place is worth drinking in, especially as the locals descend upon it a little later in the evening.

This Italian coffee bar is nothing fancy, but it is absolutely authentic. With lots of regulars and locals, Bar Gianicolo is superb for people-watching and getting the real Roman experience. Sit outside and order a coffee or ‘spritz,’ a summery Italian cocktail made with Prosecco and Aperol, and watch how Italians enjoy the day while the Roman traffic whooshes down Gianicolo Hill. To soak up some of the best views of Rome and the magnificent marble, seventeenth century ‘Fontana dell’Acqua Paola,’ walk up Gianicolo Hill to the bar by using the steps that start in Trastevere. Take in the terra cotta rooftops and soft domed churches, before heading to the bar.

Panella is best known for its artisanal breads and pastries – check out the window display of intricate dough sculptures shaped like the Colosseum and other Rome icons – but the outdoor seating area, draped in colourful and shade-giving flowers, makes it a charming spot to enjoy a coffee. Try the caffè freddo – a cold, sweet coffee that is a little longer than a regular espresso – at one of the high tables with stools, where there’s no service charge.

Very nearly a century old, Sciascia is an old-school coffee house in the white-collar neighbourhood of Prati. Opened in 1860, Antico Caffè Greco is the oldest coffee shop in Rome and the second-oldest in all of Italy. An eclectic mix of intellectuals and freethinkers have frequented this historic bar over the years, including Hans Christian Andersen, Casanova, Keats, Shelley, Mark Twain and Orson Welles, to name a few. The vibe is formal and the prices high, hitting double figures for coffee and a pastry sitting at one of the antique, marble-topped tables. Opt to stand at the bar instead if you want to pay less.

Offering coffee, cocktails, light lunches, pastries, and even gelato, Andreotti keeps the residents of Ostiense fed and watered from dawn ’til dusk. These days, the décor is bright and modern but a vintage snapshot of the Andredotti family reveals the historical roots of this family-run pastry shop and café. The small cakes and pastries, known as pasticcini, are the perfect accompaniment to coffee and are also available to take away. In fact, an elegantly wrapped tray of pasticcini is the Italians’ gift of choice for dinner parties.

Billing itself as Rome’s first speciality coffee shop, Faro is unlike a typical Italian bar. Customers can sip at leisure in this contemporary space and staff are happy to share knowledge of the coffee production process. Here, roasting is deliberately light and delicate to avoid any bitter notes, meaning skipping sugar is recommended. There’s plenty of choice in both the method of brewing (espresso machine, AeroPress, syphon) and the type of bean – go for the house blend or one of the higher-priced coffees from the specials menu.

Roscioli Caffè is part of the Roscioli-family empire, which includes an upscale restaurant and a speciality bakery with institution-like status in Rome. Thanks to its use of Arabica beans from Torrefazione Giamaica Caffè, an artisanal roaster based in Verona, and its interest in brewing techniques new to Romans, such as pour-over and syphon, this tiny shop has quickly become known for its top-quality coffee. Enjoy with a cream-filled bun known as a maritozzo, a Roman speciality.

Considered by many to be the oldest bakery in Rome, Pasticceria Regoli is a proper old-school bar and the perfect place to try an authentic Roman-style coffee. This charming little coffee house is still a family-owned venture, as it’s been for the past century. “There’s something so nostalgic about it. It reminds me of Sundays with my family,” says Troia. If you’re still wondering why Italians typically choose a simple espresso, accompany it with a maritozzo, a sugary bun stuffed with whipped cream; it’s a traditional Roman pastry and pairs perfectly with the bitterness of the coffee.

La Casa del Caffè Tazza d’Oro could be mistaken for a tourist trap because of its location right in front of the Pantheon, but it’s far from it. “Just go there after 7pm or early in the mornings, and the tourists should be gone,” says Barbieri. Romans love this venue, especially during the summer when it starts selling its city-famous granita – basically a coffee slushie covered in whipped cream. La Casa del Caffè Tazza d’Oro is also a coffee snob’s favourite, selling its own roast, humbly named La Regina del Caffè (the Queen of Coffee) that the founder created in the 1950s after taking numerous trips to South America.

Necci dal 1924 is a second home for coffee lovers in Rome. With modern, stylish interiors and reclaimed wood tables, it only makes sense that it would be set in the ‘Brooklyn of Rome’, Pigneto. Barbieri says visitors should head straight to the outdoor seating area: “Its outside space really makes it. There’s nothing like sipping coffee under a tangle of ivy and fairy lights.” Necci’s signature drink, the caffè pugliese, takes inspiration from southern Italy, mixing iced coffee with almond syrup. With its perfect balance of sweet and bitter, it’s a welcome drink during Rome’s hot summer days.

Being artisans themselves, the owners of this café and German-style bakery named their business after the patron saints of artisans. The first thing you’ll notice is the different types of bread (usually over 15) lining the walls, and the coffee is just as noteworthy. “The cappuccinos are extra foamy, and the smell of fresh bread makes it oh so cosy,” says Barbieri. Try the typical Italian ‘grandma-style’ breakfast: bread, butter and jam, but served on gourmet raisin-and-cinnamon bread with home-made raspberry compote.

Piazza di San Calisto, in the heart of Trastevere, looks like it’s straight from a postcard, with pale-yellow walls, cobbled pavement and clotheslines full of laundry left hanging to dry and fluttering in the breeze. Gran Caffè The Caffetteria in Piazza di Pietra, in the center, a place where you can find the real coffee of the Neapolitan tradition. The period display cases house wines, champagnes and spirits of the best quality. Among the dishes, the Neapolitan rice timbale (sartù) and the endive savory pies are good. There is no shortage of traditional Neapolitan desserts such as babà and pastiera, a vast assortment of traditional artisan pastries. It often hosts literary events and is a meeting point for politicians from the nearby Montecitorio palace but also for artists, journalists and writers.

It almost feels premonitory that the most tranquil, hidden gem of Rome’s centre, a few steps from the bustle of Piazza Navona, is located at the Vicolo della Pace (Peace Alley). The first commission of Bramante - who would be Michaelangelo’s greatest rival -, the cloister is a Renaissance masterpiece in itself, with some added bonus. First, the museum holds regularly impressive art exhibitions. Second, from a beautiful reading room in the first floor you can find a window looking directly at the church with a frontal view of the famous Raphael fresco ‘The Sybils’. Finally, all around the cloister’s first floor arcade there are tables served by a small cafeteria, with a splendid coffee, fresh pastries and free wifi. It is also one of the few places where you can stay there for hours reading and macbook-camping without being frown upon by the waiters, which means is a haven for local students. Great coffee on a cloister protected from tourists' selfie sticks and Rome’s scorching sun looking at a Raphael fresco? Unmissable!

This unapologetically ‘radical-chic’ wine bar is an oasis of enophiles and leftist-leaning intellectuals in the middle of all the action. Despite its proximity to touristy Campo de’ Fiori, Il Vinaietto is refreshingly untrendy and exceedingly local – always a welcome find in the historic center. With a dozen wines by the glass ranging from €4-6 or a wide selection of affordably-priced bottles for sale (uncorked for a fee), it’s a nice place to stop by for a quick drink and chat with friends. The crowd is slightly older and the bar doesn’t offer much in the way of snacks so pick up some pizza at the nearby Forno Roscioli which you can enjoy inside alongside your wine.

Spirito DiVino is a restaurant that is best known for its impressive, ancient wine cellar but its enological prowess is matched by its fabulous food. Its wine cellar is considered the oldest in the city, dating back to 80 BC, and now contains almost 1,000 bottles. On the menu you’ll find comforting and innovative dishes such as stracciatella di bufala with tomato confit and bread crumbs and braised pork with apple purée. If that isn’t enough to get you excited, Spirito DiVino is even part of the Slow Food Movement which supports traditional methods of agriculture and purchases products from local farmers.

Located in a late 15th century building near one of Rome’s most renowned piazzas, Piazza Navona, Mimì e Cocò is a wine bar with a familiar atmosphere. Wine and hospitality are, according to proprietors Andrea and Alessandro, the two central aspects of this place. The staff are welcoming and accommodating, their aim being a warm-hearted reception to all in order to make them feel at home. Among their wines are predominantly Italian labels and their menu is very much focused on local products and standard Roman cuisine.

Even closer to the cultural experiences available in Garbatella is L’Ambretta, resident restaurant and bar to the Ambra theater. Described as a place where ‘refinement and resourcefulness join hands’, the building, also containing a reading room and meeting rooms is bustling with cultural artifacts of every kind, surrounding the restaurant and bar. Famed among locals for the owner, Marisa, and her authentic and homely kitchen, if you want to visit a truly Roman institution in the morning hours, this is the place. Perhaps mostly known for the hearty pasta dishes, the traditional Roman trattoria Li Scalini di Marisa also serves Italian breakfast classics. Situated in the heart of the district, this rustic restaurant suits the traveller in need of a break from wandering back alleys, ready to sit down with a cup of coffee and observe life as it unfolds in this village within the city.

ONE OF THE BEST IN ROME !!! Ivo and Trastevere a love for 60 years! Ivo in Trastevere. In the early 1960s, Ivo Stefanelli set up his own in the heart of Trastevere. In a short time it became the reference point for all the desserts. First desserts with desserts and then with pizzas. Soon they came from all over Rome … a growing success that led him to expand the room up to 4 rooms. And that’s how the fame that marked the history of Ivo in Trastevere began, today a destination for clients coming from all over the world. Dna from pizzeria and restaurant quality In the ’80s Ivo had the happy idea of enlarging the kitchen proposal with fried Roman and classic first courses. In ’99 the rudder passed to his son Ivano who began to improve the selection of raw materials: fried prepared with fresh ingredients, Danish meat, cheeses and salami d.o.p, organic labels and special beers. The gastronomic revolution of Ivano is still evolving but the average price of € 20 has not changed!

Staff very friendly we felt like home. I used to live just round the corner from this restaurant about 10 years ago and I still return to it now when I go on holidays!!! Don't be fooled by the street it's on, or the exterior, you will find the tastiest antipasti, pizzas, pastas etc...at such good prices! You can tell it's gooooood as hardly any foreigners in there - mostly local families. If you want good grub away from the tourist hub, eccolo!!!

Located in an old working class neighbourhood of the city, Da Bucatino serves dishes typical of the Roman cuisine. Their most famous dish on the menu is of course the one that gave the restaurant its name: “Bucatini all’Amatriciana”. Coming from Amatrice in the Lazio region, the recipe of Amatriciana has developed over the years to include bucatini (instead of spaghetti) and tomato sauce (in addition to the other two ingredients of guanciale and pecorino). It has since become one of the trademark dishes of Rome. At Bucatino they will even provide you with a bib, as dribbling tomato sauce all over you is part of the pleasure of eating this pasta!!! Also here the price affordable (I think we spent only 15€ each)! We had a great lunch and I will definitely go back. If you are planning a trip to Rome, don’t miss this place!

Perilli’s been serving Roman classics to locals since 1911 and, save for a few interior revamps, very little has changed—the menu included. But when you’ve got a list of some of the very best dishes in Rome, why alter course? There’s the carbonara, widely considered the best in Rome, and the amatriciana. But span the plastic-sheathed menu and you’ll see Perilli has so much more to offer, like a starter of Roman artichokes that have been softened in oil. The dessert list feels a little humdrum, so opt for a coffee and a grappa instead.

The House of CARBONARA: It's impossible not to eat carbonara in Rome, and most locals will say they'll never tire of the city's most beloved pasta. Enter Eggs, which has more than half a dozen variations. Served in a glass jar, the original with guanciale is quite possibly the best we’ve had in Rome; and don't sleep on the hen eggs, emptied and filled with ingredients like caviar, chives, and potatoes or salted egg nog and black truffle. Save room for the crème brûlée served in tiny glass pots, or go for the decadently sweet zabaglione, served with wafer-thin biscuits to scoop it all up.

Industrial Eat, in Rome in the Porta Pia area, is a restaurant with an attractive style. Located near Villa Borghese and overlooking Piazza Alessandria from its large windows, large and bright, it is ideal for a group break or a couple's dinner. The cuisine offers Mediterranean specialties and pasta dishes with an international flavor, including Maltagliati with grouper, aubergines and truffles, American breast point, and Argentine meat and crusted sea fillets. Burgers could not be missing on the menu, as the environment suggests, and there is a wide choice of pizzas. In short, very kind staff, a modern atmosphere and quality in the kitchen are the strengths of the Industrial Eat in Rome. Final note, the restaurant is often visited by well-known faces of entertainment, cinema and TV.

In 1922 with the first of four generations of the Panella family, it was transformed into a “tavern with a kitchen”, in effect becoming a real restaurant. Only after the sixties did a slow evolution begin, one that transformed the old neighborhood tavern into an established restaurant recognized city-wide. The history of Antica Pesa goes hand in hand with the attention and care attributed to hospitality. For this reason, the time spent at the Antica Pesa is not just a culinary experience but a journey through art history: the walls were decorated by painters who frescoed the room, the work of artists at the beginning of their careers that were inspired by the special atmosphere still found in the most characteristic neighborhoods of Rome. The search for balance between professionalism and warmth, tradition and innovation. All of this is Antica Pesa.

Hostaria Da Enzo Restaurant „A real must if you decide to spend a pleasant and tasty evening in Testaccio. Small place that in summer moves its tables outdoors to fully breathe the typically Roman air of this popular and populous neighborhood. Simple and homely menu but with attention to the quality of the products. Very good among the starters are the artichokes, dried tomatoes and fried. The Rigatoni alla Vaccinara must certainly be mentioned among the first. If you are over there, try. "

Ercoli, as noted in its name, has been around since 1928, though its original location was in the Prati neighborhood. Today, Ercoli has expanded and opened a second location in the elegant Parioli neighborhood and quickly become a favorite shopping and eating experience with locals. The space is chic, like its clientele, with three rooms and a Vermouth bar. This deli-bistrot serves Instagram-worthy charcuterie plates and makes an excellent cocktail, so it’s a nice place to stop by for an aperitivo or dinner after picking up a few items for your pantry.

Rome’s superstar baker and pizzaiolo Gabriele Bonci initially gained fame for his gourmet pizza-by-the-slice joint, Pizzarium, close to the entrance to the Vatican Museums. His bakery, Panificio Bonci, is just a few minutes away in the Prati neighbourhood. As is evidenced from their slogan, “L’arte del pane” (the art of bread), it is obvious that Panella takes their business seriously. For almost 100 years they have served freshly baked treats on the Esquiline Hill. Panella still operates as a traditional bakery, but they have expanded their menu to offer breakfast service with coffee and pastries; a rotating lunch menu that includes pasta, meat and fish; and wine and cocktails in the evening.

Down a sleepy, cobbled side street in Trastevere, most visitors walk right past the unassuming façade of Biscottificio Innocenti—understandable, as there isn’t even a sign outside. But those in the know flock to this family-run biscuit shop where the Innocenti family have been baking their selection of cookies since the 1940s. Stepping into the shop is like stepping back in time; the huge 16m retro oven is the focal point of the room, and owner Stefania is always ready to welcome guests with a warm smile.

A longstanding institution in Campo de’ Fiori, the Forno (as the locals refer to it), is a bustling hive of activity throughout the day with both Romans and tourists popping by for their bread, biscuits and pizza. For a couple euros, visitors enjoy the late afternoon snack of choice, a generous slice of pizza rossa—a crunchy thin crust topped with a flavourful, sweet tomato sauce, wrapped in distinctive brown paper. Eat it out front while peeking through the window to see the bakers in action.

It is not very common to eat food on the go in Italy. However, the exception to this sit down rule is absolutely pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice). The narrow shop on Via del Moro has an extended glass counter filled with long pizzas straight out of the oven. La Renella is not the type of place where you take the whole pizza for yourself (unless you are really, really hungry, I guess). Pizza al taglio is often called pizza by the slice, but it really means cut pizza. Simply select the kind of pizza(s) you want, and indicate how much they should cut off for youThat makes La Renella the perfect stop for a mid-afternoon merenda (snack), or you can order multiple kinds of pizza to taste the different flavors and build a more substantial meal. La Renella has been in operation since 1870. The forno is a pizzeria, panificio (bread maker) and biscotteria (cookie maker) .

Run by the Andreotti family since 1931, Adreotti alla Garbatella is a café specializing in the delicious, sweet and sticky. Rows upon rows of colorful, sugary treats line its counters, as well as a variety of anything filled or covered with cream or chocolate. The café focuses heavily on the traditions of its methods, as well as the quality of its ingredients, and was in 2012 recognized by the City of Rome as a place of historical interest. This self-proclaimed ‘oasis of quality’, is the place for a filling, sweet breakfast, or just a well-deserved hideout from the merciless, Roman sunshine.

This is the spot for a stylish break be it breakfast or aperitivo. Design is everywhere, from the elegant interiors to the many sweet and savoury treats. From great cake classics, such as Millefoglie, Mont Blanc and Mimosa, to more modern designs and chocolate pralines, this is a sweet tooth’s paradise! Their dedicated pastry chefs start the day at 3am, working to blow our minds with new flavour combinations. Also a wonderful gelateria. Must try: Jasmine tea chocolate pralines, Achrome (coconut, lime and mango pastries inspired by Italian artist Piero Manzoni).

If dessert is your favorite part of the meal, this is the place for you. ZUM – short for zucchero (sugar), uova (eggs), and mascarpone – are becoming fast favorites on the Roman food scene thanks to their savvy take on the tiramisù. Besides the classic recipe, the pastry chefs at ZUM also shake up their menu with flavors like hazelnut, berry, and rum, all cushioned between layers of their homemade savoiardi biscuits. Gluten and lactose-free varieties are also on offer for those with dietary restrictions, and their tiramisus come in a mini or single serving size, depending on how gluttonous you are.

Maritozzo is one of the best known and most delicious desserts in Rome. A wonderful little loaf made with simple ingredients and with some (understandable) secret from those who have proudly carried on its history for years and have made it a symbol, so much so that the name of the business is dedicated to him: Il Maritozzaro. We are in Via Ettore Rolli, Trastevere area a few steps from the renowned and well-known Porta Portese market. Here I recommend the "Maritozzo break" at any time of the day even at night. There are many Romans and tourists who not only at breakfast but also during the day and late at night (perhaps returning from the premises) allow themselves a small but indispensable sin of gluttony. You have to stop and enjoy this delight. Don't expect any special effects or glam furnishings, The bar is quite small and spartan, there is no seating but the special effects are all in the window. Here they stand out and you can taste some exceptional husbands with cream: soft, delicate, scented with a generous and delicious filling of fresh cream (the classic variant), but they can also be tasted with other fillings (cream, nutella, pistachio as much to name a few). The small loaf is made with a few ingredients (flour, water, yeast, milk, sugar, egg yolk, butter, oil) and as I said a few secrets (especially in leavening). All stuffed with this cascade of fresh whipped cream (the traditional variant). The result is a cloud, despite its size (not really small), the husband is light and soft and it is pure orgasmic pleasure to be able to sink one's teeth and "dirty" his face with fresh cream. I had breakfast with the Maritozzo and I loved it. Experience to be repeated. Among the unmissable addresses in Rome we must undoubtedly include the Maritozzaro, a true institution, a small symbol of a true Roman spirit. This small bar (present since 1960) resists time, changes, fashions. Not to be missed for those who want to enjoy a great Maritozzo with cream. Those lucky enough to go there will be able to enjoy fabulous husbands but also the croissants are remarkable. Il Maritozzaro, tradition and Romanism. To mark on the agenda.
