City/town information

You can get to Edinburgh in just under an hour. There are several ways to get to Edinburgh, we suggest either driving to Ingliston Park and Ride (near the airport, about 25 mins) and getting the tram (about 25 mins to centre). If you don't want to drive that far, there is a Park and Ride at Halbeath, Dunfermline (7 mins), from where you can get the bus (about 35 mins). We have both lived in Edinburgh for a number of years, and Gary still works there so please ask for more information.

if you're going to city centre we suggest driving to Lenzie (about 50 mins), free parking, and getting the train to Glasgow Queen St (11 mins) because of the traffic in Glasgow. However if you're going to visit galleries or attractions on the outskirts you'd be as well to take your car. if you're comfortable with city driving it is probably not an issue, we've just gone soft living the sticks.

About a 40 min drive, I always take exit 10, and park on the road at the South Inch (big park you drive through just before Marshall Place). There is also a the South Inch car park on the corner of Marshall Place and Shore Road.

8 mins away, this is the closest town for shopping (other than the Saline General Store). There is a Co-op and a few other little shops, a butchers, bakery, post office (in the Co-op) and a pharmacy. There is also a medical centre (Inzievar Medical and Oakley Health Centre).

Just over an hour's drive away, St Andrews, known as "the home of golf" is a historic seaside medieval town. There is lots of things to do there, with a cathedral, a University, an aquarium, a secret bunker (amongst other things) and boosts a stunningly beautiful 3 mile beach.

Food scene

About 25 mins away by car, near Kinross, lovely cosy reception and a dining room with open views. Beautiful food and lovely service. The reception is particularly nice, an old stone farmhouse style, reminds me of a hunting lodge. The restaurant is like a big conservatory. Don’t miss the three cheese soufflés.

13 minutes by car. I haven't tried this, it's so new, but the concept looks amazing. Not only is there a cafe, they also deliver food, which just looks fantastic, luxury "grazing" boards, cakes and desserts as well as other takeaway. The delivery (it's 7 miles away), or collection, would have to have been arranged in advance (they aim for 24 hours). If you do order anything please do let me know how it works so I can share more information. Thank you! (I couldn't easily find how it works on the site, so try here https://pollys-pantry.co.uk/pages/how-it-works)

Delivery only. I cannot personally recommend but a couple of recent guests have had deliveries (through Just Eat) from here. It seems the Indian food is good, the other offerings are a mixed bag. Online reviews seem to support this. If you do try it please let me know your review!

About an hour's drive, Callander is a bustling holiday town known as the gateway to the Highlands. The A84 North from Callander to Glen Coe (another 1.5 hours each way) is a beautiful drive, and Glen Coe is probably one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. Callander itself is at the junction of two rivers in an area of outstanding natural beauty known as the Trossachs.

No longer open as a B&B, we visited these gardens yesterday and I was blown away. I was prepared to be underwhelmed but they are beautiful. The house is visible from the Shed, just walk down the farm road turn left and left again. It's a beautiful house set in fascinating gardens and the woodland walk links to a path that runs alongside the river and you can (apparently, haven't done it yet, need to do some research) get back to the castle ruins that the Shed looks out onto. I'm not sure how, the path was on the far side of the river, but if you're adventurous, please try it and let us know! https://www.discoverscottishgardens.org/garden/kirklands/ This year they are open Saturday-Sunday 2-4.30pm and there were cream teas (didn't try them I'm afraid). Please check times at https://www.facebook.com/kirklandshouseandgarden/
