Activity

Free outdoor activity. The name of the bridge varies depending on who you talk to. This is because there are multiple names for the same streets in Austin, and 360 Highway is the same highway as Capitol of Texas Highway. Sometimes the bridge is called the 360 Bridge, or the Pennybacker Bridge on Capitol Texas Highway. The hike is fun and a great opportunity to pack a lunch and enjoy the views of the bridge, Austin Country Club, Lake Austin, and Bunny Run Nature Preserve. However, the hike is steep so not a good place to take the little ones, and proper shoes are needed.

Mount Bonnell Covert Park has free admission as well. This activity is another steep walk up a large hill, but at the top, the land flattens out with amazing views, great for picture taking. There is also a historic plaque telling the story of the militia who originally hiked the land and surveyed the territory. It’s an interesting bit of history and an absolutely astonishing reminder of the people who came before with nothing more than a horse, satchel, and measuring tools.

Red Bud Isle is not a total island, and too small to be a peninsula, but a fun location to spend the day on the water. The park is also next to Emmett Shelton Damn, which separates Lake Austin from Lady Bird Lake (AKA Town Lake) and is an amazing place to visit when a flash flood happens and the LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) opens the flood gates. Bring a canoe, or just a picnic near the water. Also, no reservations needed like a lot of Texas Parks require these days and no-cost admissions, but parking can take 30 minutes and cars wait in line for an open spot, so visiting in the morning is recommended. Nearby Mozart’s Café is also a must-visit coffee shop down the street with large outdoor patio seating by the water.

Lake Austin is a constant-level lake, so it never floods (expect that one time back in 1900). The City of Austin actually carved out a long water canal to connect the Colorado River. Boat rentals are 1.2 miles down the road. It’s nonstop fun all day.

Deep Eddy swimming used to be .50 cents admissions for the day. Not sure the prices now, but the water is sure to be refreshing and there are tall pecan trees to provide shade from the sun. There is also a playground nearby, and the hike and bike trail is also right next to the pool so if you want, you can go for a run and then cool off at the swimming pool for the day.

Use the “Ann and Roy Butler” entrance near Deep Eddy swimming pool to access the best of Hike and Bike Trail. If you visit this 14 mile long walking trail, you’ll see lots of people fishing, paddle boarding, rowing, and even playing canoe-volleyball. It’s an easy walking / biking trail because it’s all flat. The trail circles around Lady Bird Lake also, and cuts through downtown Austin where you can enjoy a drink at a restaurant mid-walk. There is a lot of street parking, parking under Mopac bridge, and parking near the Austin High School tennis courts.

Water from Barton Springs comes from an underground spring so it’s super cold, but people love it. It used to be clothing optional but it’s not like that anymore. It’s also located right next to Zilker Park.

There are so many sections of Zilker 350 acre park. There’s the part with the large rocks where ACL Fest is held next to the volleyball courts and views of the cityscape. There is the part with the playscape next to the mini-train station, and there is the area great for feeding ducks. There is also the dog-wash area, and the canoe rental place. The large light-up Christmas tree is also located here. Zilker Park is Austin’s main park and has multiple places to visit all in the heart of downtown Austin.

Food scene

A wonderful Cafe on the lake with coffee and desserts. Mozart’s Cafe’s has a great ambience during the day with amazing views of the water, and at night there’s candles on the tables and a large open patio.

Barton Springs swimming pool, Zilker Park, the Hike and Bike Trail, and Music at the Continental Club. Shopping on South Congress, Paddle Boarding on Town Lake / Lady Bird Lake, and Hidden Bars like the Garage and ATM machine.

South Congress Avenue has lots of great unique shopping, like vintage finds, and local art. Lots of great food trucks and restaurants. I suggest getting a pool pass at one of the local hotels for $25 per person and go swimming to take a break from the sun during the heat of the day. Also great views of the Capital and this is where people go to watch the bats.

The Texas Capitol is one of the largest State Capitol’s in the country. The Texas Capitol also has beautiful green lawns all around with large iron statues that are a wonderful salute to Texas. the Capitol is located on Congress Avenue which is the main street that divides the city into east and west sides. Everything east of Congress Avenue is considered East Austin, and everything west of Congress is considered the west side. There are miles of restaurants to choose from, beautiful historic hotels, and the shopping is very fun here as well. No need to remain on foot, fun light-up cabs circle the streets once your arms are full of souvenirs.

Day Trip

Pedernales State Park is a must-see day trip. When the water levels are high it’s an amazing sight to see a large creek bed over-flow with rushing water. Visitors rest on the rocks next to the water and swim in the numerous swimming holes. There are miles of waterfront to choose your spot for the day. It is a State Park so reservations are needed to be made in advance.

Hamilton Pool day trip is probably the number one destination I recommend people to go to. Reservations need to be made in advance because they only let in a limited amount of people in the park, ensuring that your visit will be very clean and well-kept without overcrowding. It’s an absolutely beautiful and unique swimming hole I hope everybody gets a chance to see.

Enchanted Rock is a giant monolith made out of granite. There is lots of folk lore about the rock, and also a lot of fun to climb. Fredericksburg has attracted a lot of attention in the last few years and has grown quite a bit. Otherwise, it has always been a very quaint and unique place to visit. There are some wineries and local stores nice to shop after a hike.
