The largest Mahayana pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, a center for Buddhist beliefs and practices, and one of the city's most beautiful tourist attractions, Vinh Nghiem Pagoda is a must see when visiting Ho Chi Minh City. “Chùa Vĩnh Nghiêm” was built over a span of seven years, from 1964 to 1971. The complex, an area of around 6,000 square meters, comprises of the pagoda itself, as well as a 25 meter tall four-story tower that stands behind the pagoda, which was finished in 1982. The pagoda has two floors - a sanctuary on the top floor and a ground floor usually open to visitors. Vinh Nghiem Pagoda fuses Japanese influence with traditional Vietnamese architecture. Based largely on the design of its namesake, the complex was built with the assistance of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association. The Vinh Nghiem Pagoda is open to visitors and worshippers all year round, but depending on what aspect of the temple you wish to see, you should visit at certain times. For the quiet and peace of everyday worship, visit in the morning and avoid big celebrations and festivals. Once encompassing an entire city block, HCMC's Ky Dong Church has been downsized. However, the compound is still broad and boasts a school, religious souvenir shop and garden. As it may not be worth a special trip, only visit if you are already in the area or have some time on your hands. During Catholic mass, the church is packed with worshippers. Around Saigon there are a few Catholic churches, due in no small part to the influence of the French. Ky Dong Church offers HCMC residents and the travelling faithful the opportunity to attend a Catholic mass. The church's architecture is worth bringing a camera along. Pose in front of the striking statue of Saint Mary, outside. Address: 38 Kỳ Đồng, Phường 9, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh Phone: 028 3931 6322

Vuon Xoai church is one of the most modern churches in HCMC. In 1947, the church was built in a poor neighborhood as a place of worship for the people living there. Its architecture is a typical design of the Vietnamese temple (unlike most of the church built in the 19th century) with blue-tiled roof and "three-door" entrance. If you are interested in seeing every aspect of Vietnamese cathollics, Vuon Xoai church will be an interesting destination. Add: 413 Đ. Lê Văn Sỹ, Phường 12, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh Tel: 028 3931 8297

Xa Loi Pagoda is a Buddhist landmark which consists of seven tiers and is the colourful centre point of a well maintained garden. The temple complex was built in 1956 and previously functioned as the headquarters of Buddhism in Southern Vietnam. Inside the complex you’ll also find a ceremonial hall, bell tower and several statues. The complex is most famous for two aspects; namely, being the residence of Thich Quang Duc (the monk famed for burning himself to death as a form of protest against religious persecution), and the series of raids regarding the Buddhist’ protests. The actions of Thich Quang Duc are known throughout the world, and the photo of this moment has even been called, by some historians, ‘one of the pictures of the century’. After this incident, Xa Loi Pagoda was raided by government troops and police officers to knock down the base of the Buddhist civil rights organisation. Xa Loi Pagoda and the wider temple complex is worth a visit to understand and see with your own eyes the significance of this place and its place in history. When visiting the temple please make sure you do not wear shorts and have your shoulders covered. To enter the main ceremonial hall you have to go to the first level of the tower by stairs, men will enter on the stairs to the left and women on the right side. The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City first opened to the public in 1975. Once known as the ‘Museum of American War Crimes’, it's a shocking reminder of the long and brutal Vietnam War. Graphic photographs and American military equipment are on display. There's a helicopter with rocket launchers, a tank, a fighter plane, a single-seater attack aircraft. You can also see a conventional bomb that weighs at 6,800kg. American troops had used these weapons against the Vietnamese between 1945 and 1975. Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 is a great place to buy local handicrafts, branded goods, Vietnamese art and other souvenirs. Here, you’ll find eating stalls inside the market where you can get a taste of hawker-style Vietnamese cuisine or simply cool off with a cold drink when the bargaining becomes too much. The market is big, difficult to navigate at times and certainly best avoided during the hottest part of the day but all the same its well worth a look. When night falls, restaurants around the perimeter of the market open their doors creating a vibrant street side scene filling the air with the scents of wok-fried noodles, barbecued fish and meats. One of Saigon’s oldest landmarks, Ben Thanh offers a great atmosphere that is absolutely authentically Vietnamese. Add: Chợ, Đường Lê Lợi, Phường Bến Thành, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh Phone: 028 3829 9274

Nguyen Hue Street is a broad walking promenade in the middle of District 1 city centre. This pedestrian area is flanked by some beautiful French colonial architectural wonders like the People’s Comittee, the Rex Hotel and a luxury shopping mall. In front of the People’s Committee you find a statue of Uncle Ho Chi Minh and a fountain show by night. At the other end of the promenade you find the Saigon River from where you can enjoy a nice view with a breeze. Walking from one end of the street to the other takes you around ten minutes and you will find some nice bars and restaurants along the way. It is nice to walk on Nguyen Hue Street, or take a seat on one of the benches, to have a look at the daily life and routine of the locals. From Nguyen Hue street other sightseeing places are easily reached, you find the Saigon Opera House and Dong Khoi shopping street only 100 metres away. Standing magnificently at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City is the Saigon Opera House, which is also known as the Municipal Theater. The building stands as one of the impressive sight in Saigon – both night and day. Saigon Opera House was built in 1898 by the French architect – Eugene Ferret, following the “flamboyant” style of the French Third Republic. It was set to be two meters higher than the street surface with two door layers, in order to prevent traffic noise. Built in parallel structure, the Opera House is located on the city’s center axis, connecting the metro station and roundabout in front of Ben Thanh market. From a distance, the Opera House looks like a beautiful gigantic city gate. The architecture boasts stone-carved ornaments and statues at the entrance, crystal chandeliers, and shiny granite floor at the lobby area – all built with materials imported from France. The oval auditorium with 468 seats offers good view from every seat. It is also echo-free and therefore preserves all the sound inside the theatre. The theatre is now a venue for many high profile events and cultural – entertainment activities of the city. Certified as a national relic in 2012, this magnificent building stays on top of the must-visit of Ho Chi Minh City. Add: 07 Công Trường Lam Sơn, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh Phone: 028 3829 9976

Mien Dong Thao (Miền đồng thảo) Cafe is built around a man-made stream with trees and ivy growing up around it. Its name will say it all, “mien dong thao” cafe almost stirs up the curiosity of people who used to pass through it, especially when they can see the fresh green grass growing all around . When it was opened, this garden cafe attracted an amazingly large number of guests. Lots of them come here to satisfy their curiosity, but then they come here to find themselves an utterly relaxing space in the true sense of the word. Mien Dong Thao cafe’s guests are quite abundant, from the lovely couples, young groups to the officers who both want to find a romantic space for themselves or for their little families. Com Tam Ba Ghien (Cơm Tấm Ba Ghiền) is a well known restaurant in Saigon, probably the most famous place to eat the simple combination of a grilled pork chop over the top of a bed of rice, known in Vietnamese as cơm tấm sườn nướng. It’s one of the most common meals throughout Saigon, and you’ll see it being served at countless little restaurants and street food stalls around the city. The gourmets are telling each other to come to Qua Ngon Restaurant for delicious seafood, and special dishes. Among numberless restaurants, finding one with delicious dishes, reasonable prices, beautiful view, and health safety is like “finding a needle in a haystack”. Usually, if a restaurant has nice scene, its dishes will be bad and expensive, and vice versa; a restaurant with “4 good points in 1” like that is very difficult to find. Fortunately, Qua Ngon Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City has all of those characteristics. In the first place, entering the restaurant, customers feel very comfortable; and after that, enjoying the good dishes in an open, cool, and nice space is more than wonderful. Customers will also be surprised at an exotic and variable seafood and special dishes which saticfy anyone’s culinary passion: Pearl grouper, stonefish, lobster, Dong Tao chicken, turtle, roasted ethnic pig, thorn shellfish, great clam, aromr triggerfish, yellow Lentil fish, oyster, crab, geoduck, cobia, lobster, Queen nails, etc.. All of the fresh food is cooked right in the kitchen of restaurant by many talented chefs. Maybe with such a professional style like that, it is not surprised that Qua Ngon Restaurant is voted as one of the best and most famous restaurants in Saigon by the prestigious newspaper; online newspaper, cuisine magazines and customers, also. Hue Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) is a specialty food in Central Vietnam. However, this food has won the heart of most Vietnamese people and foreigners for its flavorful taste. Coming to Vietnam, you can find hundreds of restaurants and food stalls which serve Bun Bo Hue. On the way exploring District 1, Ho Chi Minh City we stop at Bun Bo Ganh restaurant – Bun Bo Ganh where I have been served the most delicious Hue Noodle Soup. After a long day driving around to see the city under the sun, I totally relax at a wooden table in an ancient house in Saigon style with lots of banana trees around the restaurant. Although it was hot and there was no air-conditioner and the restaurant was open, I felt cool and comfortable. Especially, the restaurant was an old house with classical architecture and made me peaceful to seat inside. They grew lines of banana trees around and use many wooden tables and chairs to serve foods. Coming to Bun Bo Ganh, you must try Hue Noodle Soup with special and unique flavor. At first, I tasted the broth which was cooked from bone and many kinds of Vietnamese ingredients such as ginger, lemon grass, . They put so much chopped green onion, crab and shrimp pie, meat ball, slices of boiled beef and pork leg. The noodle was thick and tender which was a perfect mix with the broth. A plate of fresh assorted herbs, morning glory slices was also served with the bowl of Bun Bo Hue. After enjoying a tasty Bun Bo Hue, I ordered a portion of mixed Hue savory cakes including Banh Nam, Banh Loc, Banh It Tran, Banh Beo and Beef Pie. They sprinkled crushed peanut and crackers on cakes which made the dish very attractive. All of these cakes are eaten with fish sauce dip. I think you shouldn’t miss them on the trip to Saigon, Vietnam. Address: 110 Lý Chính Thắng, Phường 8, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh Phone: 028 6684 3263

Vietnamese food is one of the healthiest in the world, as generous portions of fresh herbs and green are served alongside rice, noodles, pork, poultry, beef and seafood. You can enjoy Pho, Banh Mi, spring rolls, banh xeo about 2$. It is cool!
