Sightseeing

St Kilda Pier's history dates back to 1853 when the St Kilda Pier and Jetty Company constructed a wooden jetty to assist the early settlers in unloading timber, building materials and firewood to St Kilda. Not long after its construction the small jetty fell victim to a stormy Port Phillip Bay and was washed away. The historic St Kilda Pier Kiosk was built in 1904 and has undergone several renovations in its time including being completely rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 2004. A stroll to the end of the pier provides a panoramic view of the Melbourne skyline and Port Philip Bay.

A tranquil oasis in the heart of St Kilda. Great at any time of the day but an early morning walk and early evening walk are the perfect antidote to the stresses of the day.

Food scene

One of St Kilda’s institutions. Sit outside on Acland Street on a sunny day and watch the world go by with a cold beer or wine. In winter, two roaring fires provide the perfect backdrop to work your way through their extensive drinks list.

A firm favourite of St Kilda locals. One of the better Italian restaurants in the area. Slightly more expensive than the larger venues on Acland Street but in our opinion well worth it. There is a choice of formal dining in the front restaurant or more casual dining in the ‘Back Bar’. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Probably the best Amaretto Sours this side of London.

The Woodfrog Bakery began life in a big vacant furniture shop in St Kilda with a plan to create some of the finest breads imaginable, without compromise. Less than a two minute walk from the apartment they have an extensive array of sourdough breads, fruit bread, bagels and challah. There is a cafe attached to the bakery where you can partake in a coffee and almond croissant along with a wide range of breakfasts. Highly recommended.

The Galleon Cafe commands enormous affection from its fiercely loyal patrons. True the service can be, at times, a little brusque, but their tea is fantastic and still loose leaf. The food is prepared in a tiny open plan kitchen and is the reason why people return time after time after time. On weekends we would recommend getting there early or be prepared to wait.
