Sightseeing

This castle is on a National Trust property which also includes Newton House. Whether you have a dog or not this is a beautiful place for walking. Spot the resident deer herd and the ancient white cattle breed. There’s a cafe and shop and a really good second hand book shop occupying a large space with comfortable sofas. During holiday periods there’s generally something going on with lots to do for everyone.

A scenic drive leads to this National Trust old Roman gold mine which was again reworked by the Victorians and continued to be mined up until the early 20th century. Underground tours are fascinating Cafe on site but the Dolaucothi Arms is a five minute drive away which is also well worth visiting

A favourite castle because of its underground tunnel! My imagination has always run wild here. There’s a cafe here too and being licences it’s possible to get married here too

Even on a very wet day walking around these gardens can be enjoyed as much is under the cover of the huge big glass dome. Falcon displays. Cafes. A buggy will transport those with mobility issues.

Although the red kites circle overhead it’s fascinating to drive about five miles up the road to see the kites being fed.

A fascinating insight back into life on a small, self contained Welsh country estate which highlights the interdependency of the owners and their staff. As well as the house designed by John Nash (born in Carmarthen) there’s the farm and a riverside walk.

Food scene

Local food and hospitality
Open Wednesday and Friday to Sunday 11am - 4pm. Just yards (3 minute walk) from VanAnn this cafe along with its craft shop is open during the day. Volunteers (including me!) help run this local community space. Food is basic but well prepared and includes locally made chutneys and jams and cake plus cawl (Welsh soup) A Farmer's Market is held once a month - usually on the last Sunday of every month. A talk on the local history centred around the Physicians of Myddfai and their legendary mother - the Lady of the Lake - can be arranged. The price generally includes a typical welsh tea with bara brith ( a tea bread) and welsh cakes.

Italian food cooked and served by Italians. Love this place and it’s open all day so after a days shopping it’s perfect for having a late “lunch” at 4pm before heading back to Myddfai

Fabulous food and busy restaurant. You do need to book. Over two floors with a room off to one side upstairs for a larger group. My family took me here for my birthday recently and it felt like a grown up sophisticated meal out despite there being three babies in our group. The staff looked after us brilliantly. Really enjoyable.

Bring clothes to cater for changeable weather

Within the space of a week (April) we’ve had brilliant sunshine and warmth, hail and rain and even snow so be prepared. Bring wet weather gear and wellies plus hiking boots and shorts, hats and sun tan lotion. Bring flip flops for walking (especially at night) from the van to the loo.
Hvað á að taka með

Charcoal/wood

If you are going to cook on the fire pit don’t forget to bring some charcoal. A small amount of wood to get you going is supplied but bring more to top up.
