You can take the Swanage steam railway to Corfe Castle. The town of Corfe Castle is beautiful and at its centre is the historic castle, now owned by the National Trust. Check out their website for events, re-enactments and trails. The town is lovely to wonder round has great pubs, icecream shop and is a great starting point for a walk. You can get there by steam train or walk across the ridge from Swanage (about miles)

A lovely trip on the vintage steam 🚂 or diesel train 🚞. Just walk into town by cutting through the main beach car park nearly opposite Sandy Shores and you will see the station. The Swanage Railway is one of Britain’s most popular heritage railways, with steam trains running every day between April and October. As well as February half term from Norden to Swanage via Corfe Castle taking in the beauty of the area. You’ll probably hear the sound of it starting up or the whistle, from the house as the railway line is just behind the park opposite the house!

Tyneham Village - where time stopped in 1943... Often referred to as Dorset’s ‘lost’ village, only the memories of who used to live here now remain. The village was evacuated in December 1943 during WWII and has been deserted ever since. The area was needed for military training but after the war ended, the villagers were not allowed to return. You can still see some of the original buildings - The Row was a row of four terraced houses, numbered from the higher end nearest the church. Both the restored Church and School buildings are still intact and have exhibitions about the village and villagers. At Tyneham Farm, some of the outbuildings have been restored and there is a picnic area to enjoy. A 1 mile walk (about 20 minutes) from the village leads to Worbarrow Bay - part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Because of its remote location, being only accessed via the village, South West Coast Path or by sea, the Bay is not overcrowded with visitors and is a wonderful location to enjoy a picnic. Remember, Tyneham and Worbarrow are part of the Ministry of Defence Lulworth Ranges so if walking to Worbarrow Bay you must keep to the paths marked with yellow posts at all times. Dogs are welcome at the village and Worbarrow Bay. The Village, Worbarrow Bay and Lulworth Ranges are managed by the Ministry of Defence and therefore access is sometimes limited. Generally, they are open at weekends and during public holidays, however for exact opening dates and times and for further information go to: https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/lulworth-range-walks

A great place to visit, full off history, truly unique and a total surprise inside. Really good value, visit the castle, church, chapel and the garden, which have garden games set out in good weather. Also lovely out eating area. Pay to park and just walk the grounds or add castle entrance for the total experience. Lulworth castle grounds are the site of the annual Bestival festival. Trip can be combined with a trip to Lulworth Cove.

A beautiful, rugged beach. A nice walk down the coastal path from Worth Matravers or a longer walk through farm land ending in a rocky cliff descent from Kingston. An excellent place for fossil hunting, this remote cove is worth the walk down. A rock and pebble beach with steep cliffs surrounding it. Even in the height of summer it’s never very busy, but you do need to take everything with you as they are not facilities at the beach.

A real local success story. Chococo originated in Swanage and can now be found in many high end retailers like Selfridges! The chocolates are amazing and the coffee (always served with a free chocolate!) is excellent. The hot chocolates to die for and my son always goes in for one when he visits as a special treat. In the summer their chocolate icecream in a cone is also definitely worth a try.

https://monkeyworld.org/ Set amongst the woodland of Dorset lays 65 acres of sanctuary for over 250 primates. Monkey World was set up in 1987 by Jim Cronin to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent, stable home. Today Monkey World works in conjunction with foreign governments from all over the world to stop the illegal smuggling of apes out of Africa and Asia. At the park visitors can see over 250 primates of more than 20 different species. Park Re-Opening on 12th April 2021! We are pleased that we will be allowed to open our doors once more on the 12th April! Our primates are looking forward to seeing our supporters again! In order to make the park safe for our rescued primates, staff and of course our visitors, we have a number of measures in place: Limited numbers. We will have a limited number of tickets available each days, and these will have staggered entry times to allow for a good flow of visitors around the park. Pre-booking essential. All visitors, even adoptive parents and under 3’s, need to be booked in, by visiting the website or calling the office. Mask wearing. Al visitors aged 3+ must wear a mask, visor or face covering whilst at the park at all times, except when seated in designated catering areas. Rule of 6. Visitors must abide by the rule of 6, or two households, whilst at the park.
