The Hungry Pigeon at 743 S. 4th Street is a great small restaurant and bar, open all-day and late. Similar to Olly, which has good creative healthy food and a nice bar at the corner of 5th and Bainbridge.

El Bocado at 1005 E. Passyunk Ave. (just south of Carpenter) is a great small BYOB Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant. The owners are Salvadorans so if you’re not sure which side the of the menu to order from choose El Salvador!

Sightseeing
One of the best things about this neighborhood and Philadelphia as a city is how easy it is to walk and find unexpected treats and treasures. That’s the best suggestion we can make. But to help you figure out what direction to walk in here is a basic overview
As you walk or drive north you’ll cross South Street, which is a world of its own, and then head into Society Hill, some of the oldest streets in the city, and the great Philadelphia historic sites, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Constitution Museum. On the way Washington Square, which isn’t as commercial as Rittenhouse Square on the West side of Broad, is a great small urban park.
Walking east takes you into Queen Village, more small historic streets and restaurants and bars and if you head a little to the north you’ll reach Penn’s Landing, a fun place to hang out on a weekend evening.
To the west takes you to through the historic Hawthorne neighborhood (which has its roots in families who were pushed out of Society Hill was it was redeveloped and gentrified in the 1960’s ) to Broad Street, and the Avenue of the Arts, where much of the performing arts institutions in the city are clustered. Check out the Hamilton Garden at the top floor of the Kimmel Center at 300 South Broad Street.
There is also a lot to see walking south deeper into South Philadelphia. The walk up East Passyunk is full of surprises, including small bookstores and a used typewriter store, and some of the most interesting restaurants in the city.

Food
The Italian Market, on 9th Street from Christian south to Washington Ave. is a 5-minute walk from the house. Don't miss Di Bruno’s and Claudio’s. Isgros is an amazing old-fashioned bakery at 1009 Christian. It’s a great place for cannoli’s, as is Termini Bros Bakery, which requires venturing farther into South Philadelphia (at 1523 S 8th St.). There’s a Whole Foods on the 900 block of South Street, an ACME across the street, and a natural food store, Essene Market & Café at 719 S. 4th St.

Art
Philadelphia has some great traditional art museums and some of the best mural and street art culture in the U.S. (check out the beautiful mural in the Rite Aid parking lot on the 500 block of Fitzwater)
•Bella Vista is an open-air gallery of art by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. As you walk around you’ll see dozens and dozens of houses and alleys that he has transformed. You can explore more at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens at 1020 South Street.
•Fleischer Art Memorial is a small art museum around the corner at 719 Catherine Street.
•Paradigm Art Gallery + Studio is also around the corn

Historic sites, walks and other adventures
•In addition to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, consider visiting Carpenter’s Hall, Franklin Court and American Philosophical Society.
•Take the elevator up 500 feet to the top of Philadelphia City Hall.
•A great neighborhood walk is to take Passyunk Avenue south as it cuts through South Philadelphia. Past Dickinson there are some great restaurants and unique stores.
•Of course South Street two blocks from the house is full of interesting stores, bars, clubs, and restaurants.
