My Favorite Breweries

My favorite brewery in Bend for 5 years running. They usually have my favorite beer at any given time, and they span the full range of styles. They also have my favorite atmosphere, with mountain views, a big lawn with food trucks, lawn games, and room for the kids to run around. In the summer every night here feels like a block party. Happy hour is at sunset (they call it sundowner, and it changes with the seasons of course) because they have great sunset views of the mountains.

Second favorite brewery in Bend. The beers are fantastic, and the pub is a very interesting mix of atmospheres in the different rooms. They have a bar with leather everywhere, a room with couches and a TV (great for game day), a more restaurant style area, and heated outdoor seating with a few big fireplaces.

Coffee

The Commons is my favorite location to go for a coffee downtown if I want to spend a little time in the shop. They have the best atmosphere for taking your time and hanging out. It is located inside an old historic home right on the edge of Drake Park, and you can sit on the front porch overlooking Mirror Pond. Drinks

The McMenamins in Bend is like a small campus of things to do and see, all with the great cozy and eclectic McMenamins style. Scattered throughout the property there are cozy little bars, a restaurant, movie theater, turkish style soaking pool, and a courtyard where they keep a dozen fire pits roaring. Okane's is one of my all-time favorite spots to end an evening. The atmosphere is incredible, and they keep a dozen or so big fires roaring all night. You can order drinks and food from a small house that has a bar and a few booths inside. The theater is a lot of fun. The seating is a mix of couches and chairs, and there is bar in the side room where you can order food, drinks, and movie snacks. The soaking pool is amazing after a day of skiing. It is a single open-ceiling room with a small pool sized hot tub. Its amazing to sit in the hot pool while snow drifts gently down through the ceiling. You can also take drinks in there.

The whitewater park has an awesome stretch of rapids that we like to take the family on in tubes or other inflatables. You can get out at the beach and walk back up for multiple runs, or float through to Drake Park. For a longer float we put in at Farewell Bend park and float down to the whitewater park or all the way to Drake Park and Mirror Pond. There is a shuttle that runs from Drake Park to Farewell Bend if you don't have multiple cars to shuttle with. At Whitewater Park there is also a standing wave that is engineered for surfing, and one that is engineered for kayakers. For the younger kids there is a nice beach where they can play in the sand and gentle water, and there are public bathrooms, picnic tables, and parking.

Paulina Peak is one of the best viewpoints in Central Oregon, and you can drive all the way to the top in the Summer. The Peak is inside Paulina State Park, so you will have to pay $5 to access (unless you have another pass already). The area is worth visiting and spending a day there because there is so much to see and do! On your way into the park there is an amazing waterfall you can pull of and walk to. Inside the park there is a big obsidian lava flow you can walk through. There are two Caldera lakes, one of which has a hot springs on the beach you can hike to. Near the McKay Crossing campground there are a few natural waterslides that you can slide down with just your swimsuit. Incredible jaw-dropping sight at the end of a lovely hike along the river. It's like a miniature Crater Lake in the middle of the forest, and its part of the loop we always send our friends and family on who are visiting Central Oregon for the first time. (Dee Wright > Proxy Falls > Blue Pool > Koosah Falls > Sahalie Falls > Sisters) Tends to be crowded, so a non-busy time like mid-week is best.
Koosah Falls is an easy walk from the parking lot. We highly recommend seeing Koosah Falls, then walking the .25 miles along the jaw-dropping blue McKenzie river up to Sahalie Falls. This is also part of the loop we always send our friends and family on who are visiting Central Oregon for the first time. (Dee Wright > Proxy Falls > Blue Pool > Koosah Falls > Sahalie Falls > Sisters)

THE best lake for paddling, especially early in the summer when the water isn't too low.

Really cool huge crack in the ground that you can hike and scramble through for about a mile. The kids love it! You can also see Fort Rock along the way which is another great spot. If you are feeling really adventurous you can head out to the sand dunes near Christmas valley as well. In early spring we like to hit all three in a day trip.

Another one of our favorite lakes to paddle on. The lake has a dock and a nice beach, and the mountain views on the water are stunning!

Incredible area. We like to string the painted hills, the John Day Fossil Beds, Blue Basin, and peach picking at Kimberly or Monument all in a day trip.

Huuuge waterfall that is the second tallest in Oregon. In early June there are tons of Rhododendrons in bloom everywhere. This is relatively close to Waldo lake which is a gorgeous place to paddle.
