All Smithsonian museums are free, but on Tuesdays you can visit the exquisite butterfly exhibit for free too. My kids loved it and have asked to go back several times.

Beautiful Memorial along mall, just across from the Washington Memorial. Best thing is to walk from Lincoln Memorial to WW2 Memorial to Washington Memorial. Parking can be found along Constitution Ave, or you can also try along area by Martin Luther King Jr Memorial.

Best place to check out DC's newest development, tons of food options, a great place to go for a walk or go on a date. The fish market at the end has great prices for seafood as well. And if you want to grab local crabcake, the restaurants at the end of the wharf offer great options.
This is located pretty close to our home as well. Direct drive on the I-295 and you're there in about 15 minutes. Parking is available in parking lot (more expensive), or street parking, which is usually what I do. Plan to spend at least 1-2 hours here.

Awesome place to visit with kids / family. The zoo is free. And while it isn't too large, there are plenty of wonderful animals to observe. Notably the pandas are probably the most popular attractions.

About 20 minutes away, Old Town is sort of like Georgetown, but with easier parking. It's larger also, closeby to water, has a great vibe for going out, going for a walk, and is very charming.

The National Harbor is a great place to visit. There are great restaurants, an outlet shopping area, and a casino. It's about 20 minutes drive south from us. There is also a ferris wheel, water views.

Best place to take a break and grab food along mall. Located in the Sculpture Garden, prices are reasonable, and there is free jazz on Friday evenings during summer. Very conveniently located, and seating is generally available.

Parking Advice / Traveling by car
If you have a car, I definitely recommend touring the city with your car. Street parking is generally available as long as you don't have to park in a place for too long. And if there are a couple of you, it makes it worth it since train fares aren't that cheap depending on hour.

You don't have to pay to enter of the Smithsonian museums in DC. But you do have to pay for the food inside.

Packing advice for Clothing
DC weather is generally hot and humid in summers, nice in autumn and spring, and in winter it could snow / rain / be windy / or be nice. So just be aware of that. It's cold enough that if you're going to be outdoors, pack gloves and scarf and hat, even in Spring since April can still be cold.

It rains in DC more than other spots, which is why it's so green, so I'd suggest checking the weather and packing a light waterproof layer/ umbrella.
