For centuries, the peat was cut by local people and burnt as fuel. The bogs are surrounded by a unique mix of habitats teeming with wildlife, including otters, water voles and colourful dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. There are good paths and a board walk which gives easy access for wheelchair users and families using pushchairs.
