Sightseeing
Chichester Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Chichester. It is located in Chichester, in Sussex, United Kingdom. It was founded as a cathedral in 1075, when the seat of the bishop was moved from Selsey.
The Cloisters and Paradise
Built in the 15th century, Chichester Cathedral’s cloisters have been a busy thoroughfare for over 600 years. As well as providing covered passage for clergy, lay staff and worshippers, the cloisters extend and enhance the visitor's experience, providing access to the Cathedral Café and Shop, Cathedral Close and Bishop’s Palace Gardens. They also house The Royal Chantry, where the Cathedral’s offices are to be found.
Often filled with the chatter of visiting school groups from across the Diocese and overseas, the stone benches provide somewhere to rest and observe the beauty of these ancient stone passageways, which are a unique aspect of Chichester’s heritage.
No visit to Chichester Cathedral is complete without a visit to the Café. Open daily, the Café can be found in the Cloisters.
The Cathedral Close
The 16th century gateway into the Cathedral’s Historic Quarter from South Street has a double entrance that grants you access into Canon Lane. Beyond this stone entrance, Canon Lane runs straight to the opposite gateway, and into the Bishop’s Palace and gardens, at the west end.
Paths leading off from the northern side of Vicars’ Close join up to the Cathedral Cloisters.
The westerly path is ‘St Richard’s Walk’, giving a fine view of the Deanery. This house was built in 1725, replacing the previous Deanery which was damaged in the English Civil War of 1642.
The easterly path is the Vicars’ Close, with a terrace of four houses created out of the twelve which were once the homes of the vicars’ choral. Originally there was another row opposite, but these were turned into shops facing out into South Street in 1825. Also here, at the top of Vicars’ Close, stands Vicars’ Hall, a useful meeting place for Cathedral and community functions, which is also available for private hire.

1800 years after they were first built, the Roman walls of Noviomagus Reginorum remain largely in place. The Centurion Way was once the Chichester to Midhurst Railway line. The section between Lavant and Chichester was used for the transportation of sugar beet and
was closed completely in 1957. The tracks were removed in 1993. The name Centurion Way was suggested by a local schoolboy and is based on the fact that the path crosses the course of a Roman road.
The easy access trail (1.5km) runs from Chichester to West Dean Estate and is available for cyclists and walkers to use. The easy access trail runs on a section of the Way, close to West Dean. Much of the route follows the River Lavant which is a winterbourne, only becoming a permanent feature to the south of the village of West Dean, the rest being restricted to the wetter months.

Much of the route follows the River Lavant which is a winterbourne, only becoming a permanent feature to the south of the village of West Dean, the rest being restricted to the wetter months.

Beach
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, West Wittering Beach is a large and sandy beach located at the entrance to Chichester Harbour. Proud holders of the Blue Flag Award for cleanliness and safety when it is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer months, it is a wonderful area for a traditional bucket and spade day out or as a starting point winter walk around East Head. Throughout the day, either to eat in or as a takeaway, the Beach Cafe serves an appetising range of hot and cold food (open weekends only in the winter season). Car Parking is available throughout the year, for information on car park prices please visit out website. During the summer months the beach can become particularly busy so please plan your day accordingly and arrive early to grab that space!
