Fontana Lake is a reservoir impounded by Fontana Dam on the Little Tennessee. The lake forms part of the southern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the northern border of part of the Nantahala National Forest. Depending on water levels, the lake is about 17 miles (27 km) long. The eastern end is the Tuckasegee River near Bryson City. The lake has many inlets into coves and islands created from former mountain peaks. Short of a multi-day hike, Fontana Lake provides the only access into the most remote areas of the National Park. When the lake is at the normal summer level, a boat may be used to access remote trailheads such as Hazel Creek. From the observation tower on Clingmans Dome, on a clear day, the lake can be seen nearly a mile below. The lake is used by avid fisherman, boaters, oaters, paddle boarders and at-water kayakers. Some say that Fontana Lake offers the best smallmouth bass fishing in the United States.  Learn more about camping at Fontana Lake. Check with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission at www.ncwildlife.org for fishing regulations specific to this river.

Food Scene

Our favorite!Fryemont Inn’s dining room is open to the public for both dinner and breakfast from mid-April through Thanksgiving.  All dinners include soup of the day, mixed green salad, entree of choice, family style side dishes and dessert. You’ll have a choice of five different fresh, local mountain trout entrees; as well as lamb shanks, prime rib, NY strip, sirloin, chicken dishes, Virginia ham and country ham. There’s even a children’s menu. Gleaming hardwood floors reflect the glow from the huge stone fireplace on cool mornings and evenings. Overhead, brass and wood paddle fans hang from the raftered, vaulted ceiling. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or a group event. After dinner, We enjoy a rocking chair in the inn lobby, playing games, sitting outside on the courtyard, walking the historic grounds and most of all,,, reading the Journals of letters from the past written to and from guests and inkeepers going as far back as early 1900s

If you fall in love with the area like we did on our first trip to Bryson City, stop by the Re/Max office downtown and browse their local listings from the street, or stop in and talk to their amazing and friendly staff. No pressure, just good folks who know and love their city!
We purchased our cabin through re/max after visiting BC. It was love at first site and Chester, Karen and his family helped us find the perfect spot to call home, and if you're reading this, we know you'll agree! They gave us the VIP tour of the land and went above and beyond to show us the beauty of their city, it's surroundings and made us feel like friends and locals from day one.
