This tiny cafe has lovey open air seating perfect for early morning backpacker watching and additional space in the more secluded back garden. Their scrambled egg and toast breakfast - with home-made strawberry or pineapple passion fruit jam (depending on the day) - for 80 baht keeps us coming back again and again. Opens at 8:00 (an early start for Chiang Mai)

Nicely located in the Northwest corner of the old city, this tiny shop has wonderful coffee and lovely baristas. The hipster photography-themed decor will have you wanting to linger, but there may not be space to stay for long.

Fun spot on Charoen Muang towards the highway with lots of hand carved wood furniture and dogs. Need I say more? The lychee slushy is super refreshing.

This Vietnamese restaurant near the Iron Bridge is one of our favorite places in all of Chiang Mai, hands down. Huge steaming bowls of Pho arrive with lush bouquets of herbs and Banh Mi is served on crusty bread with herbs and crunchy veggies. The owner is usually around and happy to chat, and the prices are very reasonable. The menu was recently expanded to include... drum roll please... A Philly cheesesteak with fries. Don't worry, they nail it.

One time had to wait over an hour for food, but this isn't fast food, and it doesn't taste like it either. I love the huge reclaimed wood table, funky decor, and music you don't realize is playing until you're kind of jamming out. Coffee is just okay, but the elaborate breakfast sandwiches are worth any incidental waiting.

This small cafe on Charoen Muang mixes the decor of a 60's American diner, complete with pinball machine and Marilyn Monroe wall art, with that of your typical trendy coffee shop. The staff is very pleasant, and the coffee delicious. A hot latte costs 55 THB.

I can't imagine a more lovely spot to luxuriate in the day's caffeine. Klerm Coffee sits on a pretty part of the Ping River, adjacent to an eclectic looking art gallery and a small newspaper called Proud of Chiang Mai. I was beyond content sipping my hot latte (55 baht) and nibbling a decadent slice of carrot cake. Baked goods are their strength, their lattes are perfectly nice, and the set breakfast is just alright.

We spend our meals in sensory ecstasy at The Hideout. The cool ambiance, the beaming, tech-savvy waitstaff, the video reel "About Us" playing overhead, the food, and the constantly refilled free water with lime, all left us in raptures. We always struggle choosing which sandwiches to order, because they are all packed with fresh ingredients in delicious combinations. Their smoothie with local, in-season fruits (part of the company mantra) also hits the spot. Don't forget to walk down the street to gawk at the enormous tree that inspires the restaurant's logo.

This fusion restaurant always hits the spot for inexpensive but healthy-seeming creations. The huge tea leaf salad with brown rice hints at the restaurants Burmese roots, but the burrito, pulled pork sandwich, and sweet potato fries are just as good. The prices always seems surprisingly low for the quality of food, hovering between 90-140 per plate.

The tasty, underpriced, and enormous burritos, combined with the location next to the Thapae East music venue, keep us coming back to this Mexican restaurant outside the city.

Woo has a fantastically helpful and friendly staff, and they take reservations for large groups. It is always a crowd pleaser for Westerners, as it serves upscale versions of accessible Thai dishes. We have tried almost everything on the menu at this point, and are in love with the Calamari with fried kaffir lime leaves and the cashew chicken. It is expensive for thai food, but the ambiance and quality is worth it for a nice dinner. Entrees run from 140-300 THB.

We love the crispy deep fried banana with sesame seed vendor, fresh spring roll lady, curry and potato puff pastry maker, among many other prepared food stalls. This is also where we do our fresh produce shopping several times a week. Very authentic, but basic English is spoken by most.

Hip, without the try-hard vibe of most Chiang Mai cafes. Delicious gelato-style ice cream for 35 baht a scoop.

Drinks & Nightlife

By far our favorite place for drinks in Chiang Mai. The owners are wonderful -- ask if they have brewed anything new recently! This fun spot along the river has quality beers and tap, and good bar food.
