Shakespear Regional Park is located at the uppermost tip of Whangaparoa Peninsula – making it a perfect spot to get a glimpse of the Hauraki Gulf in its best possible light. If you’re keen to see a bit of native wildlife, the Tiri Tiri Track will be right up your alley. Birdwatchers, picnicking families and keen hikers all flock over to the regional park for a summer’s day trip. The Tiri Tiri Track is well-suited for all fitness levels: it’s only five kilometres (3.1-miles) long, and would usually take a couple of hours to complete.

Catch a Fuller's ferry from Devonport or Auckland City to Rangitoto Island. Check out the Fullers Timetable for current timetable and fares: https://www.fullers.co.nz/timetables-and-fares/ Rangitoto erupted from the sea approximately 600 years ago in a series of dramatic explosions. Two episodes 10 to 50 years apart are thought to have lasted for several years each. This makes Rangitoto the youngest island in the Hauraki Gulf – the last and largest volcano to be formed in the Auckland volcanic field. Exploring Rangitoto is a ‘must do’ day out for locals and tourists alike. A gentle climb through lava fields will lead you to the summit in approximately one hour. Allow extra time to explore the lava caves on the way back, or see the historic bach community near the wharf. Take a packed lunch with you and water and enjoy a picnic on the peak while taking in the outstanding views of the Hauraki Gulf.
