Food scene

This is a great spot for fish tacos and other local staples. Be warned, you want to make the trip hungry. If you order a fish taco, you get two, and they are piled high with fish and mango slaw. Its pretty great, and you should plan on at least one meal here while you’re visiting. Just a note, you will likely wait in line at dinner to order before you sit. People will deliver your food and clean your table for you, so plan ahead when you order and pay because if you pay by card, don’t forget the tip. As a side note, they don’t always run the air conditioning, so while there’s a breeze we have seen it cold inside.

If you’re into over the top cinnamon rolls that are bathed in gooey sauce, this is your spot, and be prepared for a spike in blood sugar. You can add cream cheese frosting, raisins, or a variety of nuts depending on season. They also sell great local coffee and a wide range of breakfast sandwiches. They open really early, 5:30am, and there will be a line by 7am. It is a small place with very limited seating on the sidewalk, so plan on carrying the food out. Not an unreasonable walk from the condo, but the coffee and rolls will be blistering hot, so carrying everything back might be uncomfortable. Secret tip: the banana bread is out of this world and a great alternative to the massive cinnamon rolls.

This is a little bit of drive, maybe 10 minutes depending on traffic, but if you’re looking to overindulge for breakfast, you’ve found the right place. Macadamia pancakes with coconut syrup are a specialty, but be hungry. A few pointers as this place gets very busy and you should expect to wait. First, there is some seating on first come first served basis, but do not sit until after you’ve ordered – seating is tough so we do take out sometimes. Second, it used to be cash only, and I don’t know if that’s changed, so be prepared. Finally, while you’re waiting in line be aware of the chickens which frequent the outside of the restaurant. That said, this is a Kihei institution and you should give it a shot.

Think a taco stand that caters to the locals and surfing set. Food is quite good and portions are large. They take phone orders and you can pick up, which is sometimes a good choice because there really isn’t much option to sit inside, its mostly takeaway. Parking can be tight, but the spaces turn over quickly.

This place is special, and if you are in the unit on a Saturday, this place is a must stop. A group will show up early in the morning and start grilling half chickens. That’s the only option, and you’ll see why. Get in line, tell them how many halves you want, $10 each cash only. If you like grilled chicken, this is your thing.

Just a couple miles to the south is Monkeypod, you will want to make a reservation a couple days ahead as this place gets busy. The food is really good, but a little on the pricier side after you get used to the inexpensive fare in center Kihei. If you join them for dinner, have the Mai-Tai with eggfoam. It’s the best we’ve ever had, and sometimes going just for a drink is okay.

Five minutes away, just over the border into Wailea is Manoli’s. Don’t let the location fool you, they are serious about their food. The pizza is on point and one pie is likely big enough for two people, unless you are really hungry. They have a nice selection of other dishes as well, and we strongly recommend anything with their homemade tomato sauce – just get the garlic bread and give it a shot, you’ll be impressed. They are famous for their Chicken Scalloppini “Piccata Style,” and if you order it once you’ll know why. One of us will now only eat that when visiting, and perhaps he’s ordered two servings for himself.

This is one of the coolest places in Kihei, so bring a sweatshirt. Nestled up on a hill with some amazing views and great breezes, this is a fantastic place to eat and enjoy a couple drinks. The atmosphere is a lot of fun and despite the name it is kid friendly. Strongly recommend making reservations.

Alright, not actually a real restaurant, but this place is literally a daily stop for my family. They make gourmet and flavored lemonades and will pour them into your hydroflasks or water bottles to keep the earth clean. They also have acai bowls and other things, but my family just focuses on the lemonade and having it to take with them to the beach.

Groceries

This is only a few minutes from the airport, and about 20 minutes from the condo, so plan ahead. Not going to lie, when we come visit, most of our food items are purchased at Target. They typically have ample stock and it’s a one-stop shop for anything you need. While on vacation we prefer not to run out for food.

This is the closest large grocery store to the condo, and they have a pretty large selection. If you need something quickly, this is likely a better choice than Target. Be prepared for a little sticker shock, prices aren’t the same as on the mainland.

Definitely the most local of the options, but we have had a hard time getting what we need here, and the place gets quite crowded.

Beaches

This is by far our favorite beach on the island and being less than a minute from the unit doesn't hurt. There are places which are rocky, so it makes sense to watch little ones and the waves closely. But it has fantastic snorkeling right off the beach and you are almost guaranteed to see turtles everytime you visit.

http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/ecosystems/nars/maui/ahihi-kinau-2/ This is the best snorkeling you will find anywhere in Maui and its free. Makena road and narrow and windy, so please pay attention, especially if you have a large vehicle. ‘Ahihi is a secluded rocky beach, so be prepared if you’re going to stay for a while. Make sure you follow the signs for where to get in and out of the water, it is a matter of preservation. Suncreen has to be zinc or titanium, not normal chemical sunblock. We use watershirts instead. The waves are light and water is crystal clear; you will see a ton of fish. A few pieces of advice: wear flippers so help you keep from getting tired, snorkel with a buddy, and pay attention to where you are so you can get back to shore.

Adventure

A drive up Haleakala to the crater is well worth it. Bring sturdy shoes, go for a hike - but mind the elevation as the jump from sealevel to 10,000 feet is a challenge - and definitely take a camera. Sunrise tours are an option, but the crowds are crazy. I prefer an early morning trek up after the sunrise crowd leaves but before it clouds in for the day.

By far the best zipline operator on Maui, these guys really know how to do it right. With a big emphasis on safety, you will rip over the treetops and have unbeatable ocean views. I can't say enough good things about spending a half day on this unique experience.

A beautiful sightseeing opportunity in a deep valley on Maui. Typically humid and wet, the Io Valley is home to the Io needle, a historic and sacred site on the island. There are hiking trails nearby, but use extreme caution if you aren't used to hiking is wet and slippery tropical environments. Slides and falls are easily fatal.
