Sightseeing

Titanic woman who grew up poor as dirt, got lucky buying a mountain full of gold, was never accepted into Denver “society,” so she built a huge house on Penn St, to the envy of her society snobs. Margaret Brown is a person to know. And her house still stands as a testament to her power, will, wit and perseverance. I go visit the museum as often as I have guests. I see something new each visit.

It’s the first homestead in Denver, located exactly four miles from LoDo (lower downtown). If I recall correctly, it was established in 1856, and it remains in its original state, has been made into a museum and interactive exhibit. You can harken back to wagon-trail times and churn butter, feel the weight of a real wagon wheel, and pretend to sleep under the stars like the pioneers did (minus the typhoid fever, measles, tuberculosis and five months of not washing oneself).

Closest breathtaking views. The drive up the and through the canyon are glorious. Makes me want to get out, stop the car, and sing! If you’re a Stephen King fan, the movie/book The Shining was inspired by Estes Park, the Stanley Hotel and the hedgemaze....(in the movie, the hedges are 12 feet tall; reality is another matter...about 3 feet tall).

I love the drive to Dillon. The process is as lovely as the product; just getting there is lovely.

This is the Hauptstrasse, or main/high street, of Denver. It’s a must for tourists: free shuttle, pedestrian mall, outside shopping, dining, etc. There’s a movie theater there, lots of clubs, bars, entertainments... Sometimes, folks will put pianos in the middle of the Mall and people come out to play them. You’ll sometimes see a famous pianist, visiting Denver, and giving people an impromptu concert. It’s wonderful. You can get to the Mall via the lightrail system. It’s a fun way to spend a few hours, tooling around, and seeing downtown Denver in action. Be aware that Denver has had exponential growth in the last five years. There are plenty of people now, flocking to downtown Denver (perhaps because of Amendment 64) who are jobless and penniless, looking for handouts. Please do not pay money to panhandlers. Doing that encourages them. Giving them food is preferred, if you feel moved to help them. Many are harmless, but there is an increase of stranger-to-stranger crime, open-air drug deals, and assaults. Do be aware of the fact that Denver is a large, metropolitan city. Do not go with strangers, stay aware of your money, wallet, phone. And remember that smoking pot in the street or in public is ILLEGAL.

Food scene

Damascus restaurant, located on Colorado at Iliff (right next to Marrakech restaurant...which is good, but the babaganoush tastes sour to me).
The saltimbocca is wonderful. Authentic Tuscan dishes for the Italianophile in you!

Fast and exceptional taste. If you love NY style or Sicilian style pizza, look no further. Ask for some extra sauce- don’t even throw away your crusts!

Great Italian food on the Mall. Super service. Portions are huge, so doggie bags are expected and encouraged! ;-)

Great buffet. The best KHEER (dessert: rice, condensed milk, almonds, clove) in the world! Mmmm mmm. As a vegetarian, I can’t speak to the meat dishes, but my husband says the chicken tandoori is to die for! I’ve always left full and flavored, at a good price.
