Local places to eat

When visiting a new area I always find it helpful to get recommendations for places to eat. We have a few local favourites we would like to highlight and some which are purely here for convenience.
The Flying teapot cook ONLY fresh locally sourced produce on the premises. Their standards are high and the presentation is what you would expect at somewhere much more expensive. The surroundings are quirky and fun with a guaranteed greeting from the on site greeter - Dudley the dog. We eat and drink here regularly and highly recommend the breakfast menu for starting your day with some great food but would not want that to put you off going in for lunch where the menu is seasonal and expensive or afternoon tea/coffee with a fantastic range of cakes and deserts. The thought of which make my mouth water as I type this out.

The food and service here are great. Mo and the team are always ready to help. The restaurant offer a great range of authentic Indian cuisine at reasonable prices. There are special deals available which are advertised on their website and in the restaurant.

If you want fresh cooked and straight forward food with great service and excellent coffee then head for the Hungry one. While the interior is a little more basic than others in town the range of food is excellent, nicely prepared and great value for money. There is the option to sit outside here which can be great when the weather permits.

As you might expect from Costa the service here is excellent and the drinks menu is reliable. The food menu can be a bit limited but is available all day and is quick to arrive at your table. The team here are well trained and friendly. The place is always clean and well presented. There is the option to sit outside when the weather permits which is a lovely experience and if you are a people watcher it is not to be missed as this is a busy thoroughfare.

We love it here but it is pricey. As it is in walking distance it is a go to for us when we want to get out of the house for a while. The food is superb as is the service. There is a great range of locally produced ales on tap alongside a wide range of wines, lagers and spirits. The whole place was recently refurbished but they have managed to retain much of the old world charm of this pub. There are snugs all round the building, extensive seating and a really nicely kept beer garden. There are regular events here including live music and open mic nights. As I said earlier it is pricey for a gastro pub but the environment is a treat and the staff are really well trained.

While this is primarily a hotel it is right on the river with extensive outside spaces, function room and bar. The carvery here is amazing value with great wholesome food. The breakfast is an all you can eat buffet with everything from black pudding to salmon and fruit yoghurt. The staff are well trained, friendly and helpful. Mid week you don't usually need to book but at the weekends it does get busy. They have access to a large grassed island which is well furnished with picnic tables and is a great spot to spend a sunny afternoon. If you cannot book a room with us this is the next best place we know of. Parking is free and if you don't mind a 20 minute walk it is a fairly easy one when the weather is kind. Next door is an indoor antiques market and art gallery which we recommend if you are into such things.

This is a family owned and run establishment and they work really hard to produce fresh cooked meals which are good value for money. In my opinion this is the best chippy in town and they have won awards for their food and presentation. The team are well trained and friendly. There are daytime and mid week offers which can make eating out a bit cheaper. All their fish is from sustainable sources. There is the option to eat in here but we found the seating is very narrow and not so comfortable if you are of the larger frame. All we would say here is you won't need extra chips. Their portion sizes are generous and filling.

Places to visit.

Ferndown is quite central as a location to a lot of great places to visit. These are some local venues which are on our must see list.
The model town has been around for decades now and is internationally famous. They run all sorts of special events through the year and if the model town is not enough for you the adjacent gardens are beautifully kept and well stocked. There is a cafe here for snacks and drinks along with a gift shop. Well worth a visit if you have not been before. While there are extensive car parks in Wimborne all of them charge. These charges do vary and you will need to check them at your time of arrival.

Bournemouth beach has been a tourist attraction for a hundred years or more and is still worthy of a visit. With the world famous pier, extensive sandy beaches and views which are second to none (excluding the current blot on the landscape of an oil test rig). Bring your pennies for the slot machines and your brave smile for the zip line from the pier or listen out for the various performers and bands who bring their arts to the central square or lower gardens. There is loads to do here and frequent events in the town make it a must visit on the to do list. Buses run regularly to and from Ferndown. There is lots of parking available but it is chargeable 24 hours 7 days a week.

Brownsea Island offers the rare chance to view red squirrels outside of Scotland along with a host of other protected wildlife on this fantastic island which is cared for by the national trust. Brownsea Open Air Theatre is internationally known as one of the best of its kind with many well known stars having trodden the boards there. Access is by ferry boat only. Guided tours of the island are regular and run by well informed volunteers.

The priests house is a wonderfully well kept period house showing the various phases of history in WImborne. Well worth a visit if you like history and want to get a better idea of how the local area developed.

This place is a must for any aviation enthusiast. There are loads of aircraft here crammed onto a site which is across the road from the Bournemouth International Airport. If you ever wanted to sit at the controls of a jet fighter or take a closer look at a helicopter this is the place to go. All of the exhibits allow hands on close up experiences of the aircraft with local enthusiasts frequently on hand to answer any questions. If you fancy yourself a try at air traffic control you can take a look in the mini control tower which shows active radar pictures of live flights in the area. Check the website for opening times and prices.
